As the Sundering ripped apart the world, the night elves’ giant trees were uprooted. The night elves that were still asleep inside were scattered across the world. The druids used their magic to try to find them, but they could only rescue a fraction of their people.
The night elves that survived awoke to a world that had changed. The Well of Eternity was gone, and the night elves had lost their immortality. In its place was the Maelstrom, a chaotic whirlpool that threatened to tear the world apart.
The night elves had to adapt to this new world, and they did so by forming the Kaldorei, or “Children of the Stars.” They made their home in the new world’s dense forests and learned to use the magic of the land to survive.
The night elves’ new home was not an easy one. They were constantly under attack by the demons of the Burning Legion, as well as the dragonflights. The night elves fought back as best they could, but they were always on the defensive.
The night elves’ greatest enemy was the Lich King, Ner’zhul. Ner’zhul had once been a powerful shaman of the Horde, but he had been corrupted by the demon lord Kil’jaeden. Kil’jaeden had promised Ner’zhul power and immortality if he would serve the Burning Legion. Ner’zhul agreed, and he was transformed into the Lich King.
The Lich King created an army of undead soldiers, called the Scourge, and sent them against the night elves. The Scourge was relentless, and the night elves were forced to retreat deeper into the forests.
The night elves’ only hope was to find the Dragon Aspects. The Dragon Aspects were the protectors of the world, and they had the power to help the night elves defeat the Lich King.
