If you main a Hunter and you're pushing keys in The War Within Season 2, the short answer is Survival — and for the first time in years it isn't close. Survival sits at or near the top of nearly every Mythic+ tier list this season, while Beast Mastery is the comfortable "log in and press buttons" pick and Marksmanship is the niche burst-pull spec. Below is the actual reasoning, with the mechanics and numbers that matter so you can decide which one fits your keys.
Why Survival is the meta Mythic+ Hunter in Season 2
Survival's dominance comes down to three things: melee uptime that lets it actually use its kit, a brutal AoE/cleave profile, and the best utility package in the class. The core loop revolves around Wildfire Bomb stacking and Spearhead windows, with Coordinated Assault feeding your pet into burst. Because you're in melee, you keep near-100% uptime on dungeon trash where ranged specs lose casts dodging swirlies.
The bigger reason is utility. Survival brings Intimidation (a stun), Binding Shot (a soft AoE stun/root that is genuinely one of the best trash-stops in the game), Tranquilizing Shot for enrages and magic dispels, Misdirection to bail a tank on a bad pull, and Survival of the Fittest as a strong personal/pet defensive. In a Season 2 dungeon pool full of casters and enrage mobs, that toolkit covers interrupts, stops, and dispels that other DPS simply don't have.
The talent and stat shape that's winning
Most high-key Survival builds lean into the Sentinel hero tree for AoE damage-over-time pressure that explodes on big pulls, though Pack Leader remains viable and more forgiving for single-target-heavy keys. Stat priority generally runs Haste and Crit heavy to spam bombs and keep Spearhead/Coordinated Assault windows flowing, with Mastery and Versatility as filler. The skill expression is real: pooling focus before a pull, lining up Wildfire Bombs on a 3+ target clump, and using Binding Shot proactively rather than reactively separates a 2,000 IO Survival Hunter from a 3,000+ one.
Beast Mastery: the safe, mobile, lower-ceiling pick
Beast Mastery is still a completely legitimate keystone spec and the right call for a lot of players. Its selling point is that everything is instant-cast and mobile — you do full damage while running, which is enormous on fortified weeks and on dungeons with constant movement. You press Bestial Wrath, manage Barbed Shot stacks for Frenzy, and let your pets do the work.
The trade-offs are clear. BM's AoE is "fine" rather than exceptional, its single-target is solid but not chart-topping, and pet pathing genuinely costs you damage when mobs reposition or LoS your hunter. It also has a slightly weaker stop/control game than Survival because you're not built around Binding Shot the same way. If you're a returning player, climbing from +2 to +10, or you just want to focus on routing and mechanics without a tight melee rotation, BM is the spec that lets you do that with the fewest deaths. Many people happily push portal-range keys on BM and never touch Survival.
Marksmanship: high burst, real cost
Marksmanship in Season 2 is the boss-burst and priority-target spec. With the Sentinel tree and the current Aimed Shot / Rapid Fire setup, MM puts out excellent burst windows and great ranged single-target. The problem for Mythic+ specifically is that it now leans more on hardcast Aimed Shots than the old "lone wolf, everything instant" playstyle, so movement-heavy trash and constant swirly-dodging eat into its throughput. Its sustained cleave also trails Survival on the big pulls that define key timers.
MM is a great choice if your group wants a ranged Hunter for specific bosses, if you personally hate melee, or if your comp already has the stops covered elsewhere. Just know you're picking it in spite of the Mythic+ trash profile, not because of it.
So which should you actually play?
- Pushing title/portal-range keys and want the best ceiling: Survival. Best damage profile plus the utility that gets you invited.
- Want max comfort, mobility, and the fewest mechanical mistakes: Beast Mastery. Lower ceiling, very high floor.
- Want ranged and big single-target burst, and your group covers control: Marksmanship.
The honest take: for the vast majority of keys up to and including timing your weekly +10 for the vault, any of the three works if you play it well. Spec choice matters far more for the top 1% of pushers than it does for someone trying to clear a 7 or an 8. Don't reroll your whole Hunter chasing 2% on a sim — gear, routes, and not dying matter more.
When buying time saves you the grind
The one place spec advice runs into a wall is gearing and rating. Survival sims great, but a half-Veteran-track Hunter won't out-press a fully crested Beast Mastery main. If you're sitting at the bottom of the season with a fresh character, the fastest path to "now my spec actually performs" is closing the item-level gap. A Mythic+ gearing or weekly key carry is a sensible time-for-money trade when the realistic alternative is dozens of hours grinding crests and runs you don't enjoy — it gets your Hunter to the gear floor where the Survival-vs-BM debate is even worth having. If you've already got the time and you like the dungeons, just play it out and bank the practice; the carry only makes sense when the grind is the thing standing between you and the keys you actually want to run.
Bottom line: Survival is the best Hunter spec for Mythic+ in The War Within Season 2 thanks to melee uptime, top-tier AoE, and an unmatched control/dispel kit. Beast Mastery is the no-regret mobile pick, and Marksmanship is the burst specialist. Pick the one whose floor you can play cleanly under pressure, gear it up, and the chart difference takes care of itself.
