Mining is the best profession to pair with Jewelcrafting — it's the only one that feeds it directly, since prospecting ore is where raw gems come from. If you'd rather sell than self-supply, take Enchanting instead: you disenchant your own crafted rings and necks back into mats. Everything else pairs fine, just without the built-in loop.
Jewelcrafting pairings, ranked
| Mining | Direct feed. You mine ore, prospect it, cut what drops out. No auction house dependency, no paying someone else's markup on gems. |
| Enchanting | Best money pairing. Rings and necks you craft but can't sell get disenchanted instead of vendored, so bad crafts still return value. |
| Herbalism | Neutral, but the fastest gold-per-hour gathering option in most expansions. Fine if you plan to just buy your ore. |
| Alchemy | No shared mats with Jewelcrafting. Popular as a second profession purely on its own strength, not on synergy. |
| Inscription | Competes rather than combines — it's the other profession selling stat-boost consumables and enhancements to the same buyers. |
Is Mining or Enchanting actually better with Jewelcrafting?
Depends on what you want out of it. Mining saves you gold; Enchanting makes you gold. If Jewelcrafting is a self-sufficiency play for your main and alts, Mining wins outright — prospecting a stack of ore you dug up yourself is free gems, and you're never priced out when gem demand spikes in the first weeks of a season.
If Jewelcrafting is a business, take Enchanting. Every ring or neck that doesn't sell becomes dust and shards, and you can enchant those same items before listing them. You buy ore off the auction house instead of mining it, but the resale margin usually covers the difference.
Can you level Jewelcrafting without Mining?
Yes. Nothing about Jewelcrafting requires the Mining skill — you only need ore in your bags, and ore is one of the most reliably stocked items on any auction house. The tradeoff is cost and timing: at the start of a patch, ore prices spike exactly when you want to be leveling, and buying through that is expensive.
The usual compromise is to level with Mining, then swap Mining out for Enchanting once your Jewelcrafting is maxed and you've stockpiled mats.
What about the Midnight-specific specialization trees?
Every recent expansion has layered its own knowledge and specialization system on top of professions, and those details change per expansion. I'm keeping this answer at the level that has held steady across expansions: the ore-to-gem loop is what makes Mining the natural partner, and disenchanting your own output is what makes Enchanting the natural money partner. For current-patch specialization numbers, check in-game trainer text rather than any guide — those get stale fast.
Does Jewelcrafting still make gold?
It's steady rather than spectacular. Gems sell constantly because every raider and Mythic+ runner re-sockets gear all season, and demand refreshes with each new tier. The catch is competition: it's a popular profession, so margins on common cuts get thin. The money sits in rarer cuts and in crafted rings and necks, not in bulk commons.
If the leveling grind is the part you'd rather skip, PewPewShop's Profession-Aware Leveling (from EUR 22.4) is handled by vetted human players — coaching and play-together progression help, no bots, no cheats — so your character arrives ready to actually use the profession pair you picked.
