Blizzard has not announced a WoW: Forever character limit for launch. At PAX Australia the developers said the cap is still open because of technical limits. One number is confirmed: during Early Name Reservation, from October 27 to November 3, 2026, each owner of an upgrade pack can create up to three characters before the game launches on November 4.

How many characters can I reserve before launch?

Three. Any of the three upgrade packs unlocks Early Name Reservation, and you make the characters themselves, not just the names. Names go to whoever claims them first, and Blizzard says no name is guaranteed. If you have a name you really want, claim it early in the window.

Forever names have two parts, a first name and a last name, and both are required. They are unique across your whole region, not just one ruleset. Once someone takes a full name, nobody else in that region can use it, whichever ruleset they play on.

Does the limit apply per ruleset?

Forever doesn't use realms. You pick a ruleset instead: Normal, PvP, Roleplaying, or Hardcore, which opens after launch. Blizzard hasn't said whether the eventual character cap counts per ruleset or per account. What is confirmed is that moving a character to another ruleset means a character transfer. So choose the ruleset for each reserved character with care.

Do my beta or stress test characters carry over?

No. After the open Stress Test on October 19, Blizzard wipes all characters, names and guilds to prepare for Name Reservation. Treat everything from the beta as a test. Nothing you build there is confirmed to carry into the live game.

Why would I want more than one character?

The Legacy system rewards leveling alts. 27 of its 65 Legacy Challenges are class milestones: reaching levels 25, 45 and 60 with each class. Each challenge gives one Legacy Point, and the points are shared across the account. Each character can spend up to 16 of them on non-combat perks such as more rested XP or faster profession skill-ups. Once the cap is announced, it will decide how many alts you can keep at the same time.
