"Gear update" is not an official World of Warcraft feature — it is player shorthand for raising your character's item level. In practice that means two things: swapping pieces for higher item-level drops from dungeons, raids, PvP or the weekly vault, and spending upgrade currency at the gear upgrade vendor to push the gear you already wear further up its track.

- Where you see it: press C for the character sheet. Your average item level sits under your portrait, and hovering any slot shows that piece's own ilvl.
- Two costs to upgrade: a common upgrade currency (Valorstones during The War Within) plus tiered crests — Weathered, Carved, Runed, Gilded — which gate how high a given piece can climb.
- Upgrade tracks: gear drops on a named track such as Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero or Myth, and each track has numbered ranks, shown on the tooltip as something like "Champion 1/8".
- Where you do it: the gear upgrade NPCs in the expansion's main hub city. Drop the item in the window, pay, repeat one rank at a time.
- Names shift: currencies and track names get replaced with each expansion and reshuffled between seasons — trust the current vendor's tooltips over an old guide.
- The patch meaning: when a season rolls over, item level ceilings move up and last season's best pieces become catch-up gear.
How do I check my item level?
Open the character sheet with C. The number under your portrait is your average equipped item level — that is the figure group finder, raid leaders and most addons read. It updates the moment you equip something, so a bag full of upgrades does nothing until you actually wear them.
Two slots weigh heavily: your weapon (or weapons) and your trinkets. A weapon upgrade moves your average and your damage far more than a bracer of the same ilvl, so spend limited crests there first.
How do I actually upgrade a piece of gear?
- Fly to the current expansion's hub city and find the gear upgrade NPC (the item upgrade icon on the map).
- Drag the piece into the upgrade slot. The window shows its track, current rank, and the item level each further rank grants.
- Check the cost — a stack of the common currency plus crests of the tier that rank requires.
- Confirm. Ranks apply one at a time, so a big jump means several clicks and several payments.
- Repeat on your highest-impact slots first, not evenly across all of them.
What is the fastest way to update gear at a season start?
Run the seasonal catch-up content first — the world content, quest rewards and low-key dungeon runs that hand out baseline gear cheaply. That gives you a floor in every slot, which matters more than one shiny piece, because empty or badly outdated slots are what actually block you from harder content.
Once you are geared evenly, switch to the sources that drop higher tracks: harder dungeon keys, raid difficulties, rated PvP, and the weekly vault. Bank crests rather than spending them the second they drop — you will want them for the piece you keep for the whole season.
Does a new patch make my current gear useless?
Not instantly. A new season raises the ceiling, so the top of the previous season sits somewhere in the middle of the new one — perfectly fine for getting started, and usually replaced within the first week or two of active play.
What does change is the currency. Old crests and upgrade materials often stop being useful when the season flips, so spend them before a patch rather than hoarding them across it.
