Are heirlooms still worth buying?
Yes, if you level alts regularly. Heirlooms no longer grant a flat experience bonus per piece - that was reworked years ago - but they scale with your character, so you never shop for those slots again, and the set bonuses are built around rested-experience quality of life. Buy once, and every future alt levels in them.
If this is your only character, skip them. The gold is better spent elsewhere, and quest rewards will keep you current on their own.
Should I buy leveling gear from the Auction House?
Only cheaply, and only for two reasons: filling an empty slot, or replacing a badly outdated weapon. Your weapon has the biggest impact on kill speed while leveling, so a 10-30 gold weapon upgrade every ten levels or so is the one AH habit that actually pays off. Everything else gets replaced by quest rewards within two to five levels.
Use the AH filters: pick the slot, set the level range around your current level, sort by price, and buy the cheapest thing with your primary stat. Never pay premium prices for leveling greens - sellers list them hoping someone does exactly that.
Can I buy WoW leveling gear with real money?
Not directly - Blizzard does not sell gear for cash. The legitimate route is the WoW Token: sell one on the Auction House for gold, then spend that gold on heirlooms or AH pieces. Does buying gear matter more in Classic?
Considerably. Hardcore players go further and buy stamina gear purely as a survival margin - dying at level 40 costs a lot more than 50 gold of armor ever will.
Retail is the opposite: leveling is fast, quest gear is generous, and a fresh character can reach the cap in a weekend without ever opening the Auction House.
