WoW gold has steadily lost purchasing power since Classic — the main driver is faster gold generation, not shop-style inflation. In vanilla, 5,000g was a fortune and an epic mount was a real goal. By Shadowlands and Dragonflight, seven-figure balances were routine because mission tables, weekly chests, callings and repeatable content pump far more gold per hour than 2005-era questing ever did.

The rough shape of the curve

  • Vanilla / TBC: gold was scarce. Epic mount training was the money sink everyone planned around, and a few thousand gold marked you as wealthy.
  • Wrath / Cata / MoP: dailies and profession crafts widened the faucet. Balances climbed into the tens and hundreds of thousands for active players.
  • Warlords onward: garrison and mission-table income was the first real step change — gold per hour jumped without gold per hour of effort jumping.
  • Legion → Dragonflight → today: weekly vaults, world quests, crafting orders and high-volume mythic+ made million-gold balances normal on active accounts.

Why "price history" means two different things

Searchers usually mean one of two things, so separate them:

In-game purchasing powerWhat a fixed amount of gold buys — BoEs, consumables, mounts, AH mats. This has fallen over time.
Real-money price of goldWhat a stack of gold costs in EUR from a service. This moves with realm, expansion, faction and how much gold the current patch generates.

Why does gold get cheaper over time in real money?

Because supply grows. When a patch adds a rich, repeatable gold source, the total gold on a realm rises faster than the number of players wanting to buy it, and the real-money rate per thousand gold drifts down. When a patch removes or nerfs a faucet — or a fresh Classic realm opens with almost no gold in circulation — the rate goes back up.

Why is Classic gold so much more expensive than retail gold?

Scarcity. Classic-era economies generate a fraction of the gold per hour that modern retail does, and Hardcore realms add permadeath risk on top of that. A Classic gold balance that looks tiny next to a retail one represents far more time. That is why Classic Hardcore Gold starts from EUR 17 and Pandaria Classic Gold from EUR 36, while modern retail gold is priced per much larger blocks.

Does the WoW Token track this history?

The Token is a player-driven market: its gold price rises when many players want game time and comparatively fewer want to sell it, and falls when the reverse is true. It is the cleanest public signal of a region's gold supply over time, and it is the number most people actually check when they say "gold price history".

Does gold price differ between US and EU realms?

Yes. Regions and individual realms have separate economies, populations and Token markets, so the same amount of gold does not carry the same weight everywhere. Our US realm tiers are priced separately for that reason — WoW Gold — US Realm Tiers starts from EUR 16, and bulk retail gold starts from EUR 160.

What gold actually buys now

  • Consumables and enchants for a raid tier — the recurring cost most players underestimate.
  • BoE gear and crafting orders, which is where prices spike hardest at patch launch.
  • Mounts, transmog and AH flips, where scarcity beats gold generation entirely.

If tracking the curve is less interesting to you than just having enough gold to raid, PewPewShop covers it: WoW Gold — US Realm Tiers from EUR 16, bulk retail gold from EUR 160, Classic Hardcore Gold from EUR 17, and a Season Starter Pack bundling leveling, gearing and gold from EUR 107. Everything is handled by vetted human players — coaching, play-together and progression help, no bots, no cheats, long zero-ban record.
