In WoW: Forever, quest item drop rates are unchanged, but grouped players get them more evenly. Blizzard added hidden bad luck protection: if you haven't seen a drop in a while and your groupmates are ahead, you're more likely to get the next one. It isn't a strict round robin, so some randomness stays, and the system is still being tuned.

Quick facts: Forever group quest drops

  • Source: a post on X by Blizzard developer Josh "Aggrend" Greenfield, reported by Wowhead on September 26, 2026, during the beta.
  • Drop rates: the same as before. You won't see more quest items overall.
  • Distribution: hidden logic hands quest items to grouped players more evenly.
  • How it works: the longer you go without a drop while others move ahead, the better your odds on the next one.
  • Not round robin: nobody is promised the next item. Randomness still plays a part.
  • Status: still being tuned on the beta, so the details can change before the November 4 launch.
  • Goal: to make grouping for drop quests worth it, so nobody is left stuck at 1/10 while the rest of the party finishes.

Is it round robin loot for quest items?

No. With a true round robin, each item goes to the next player in a fixed order. Blizzard's developer said plainly that Forever doesn't do that. It works more like bad luck protection: the player who is furthest behind gets a better chance, but a lucky player can still land two drops in a row. Over a full quest, the counts should end up much closer than in the original game, where one unlucky player often kept grinding long after everyone else was done.

Do quest items drop faster in Forever?

No. Drop rates haven't changed. Blizzard said drop quests will still take time, the way they did in vanilla. Grouping doesn't make each kill more likely to drop an item. It changes who gets the item, so the whole party should finish at about the same time instead of one person lagging far behind.

Is it worth grouping for drop quests in Forever?

Yes. That's the point of the change. Forever keeps classic mob tagging, and Blizzard has said it has no plans to switch to shared tagging, so strangers fighting over the same mobs is still part of the game. In a group, everyone shares the kills, and the new logic keeps anyone from being left behind on items. The Recent Allies window also remembers who you grouped with, which makes it easy to team up again for the next zone.

Will the system change before launch?

Probably, at least a little. Blizzard described it as still being tuned on the beta, and it hasn't published exact odds or how quickly the protection builds up. Treat any specific numbers you see online as guesses until Blizzard confirms them.
