In Midnight you transmog the same way as in The War Within: open the Transmogrifier by talking to an Ethereal transmog NPC in any capital city (or use a portable transmog toy), click a gear slot, pick any appearance your Warband has collected, and pay a small gold fee per slot. Appearances are learned by looting or equipping items, and the collection is shared across every character on your account.
Step-by-step: transmogging in Midnight
- Find a Transmogrifier. Look for the Ethereal NPC with the mirror-and-wand icon on the map of any capital, including the new expansion hub. Innkeepers and guards can point you there via the map pin.
- Talk to the NPC to open the transmog window. Your character model appears with gear slots on both sides.
- Click a slot (head, shoulders, chest, weapon and so on) and choose an appearance from the list. Only pieces your armor class can wear are shown, unless the item is a cosmetic that any class can use.
- Use the search box or the Sets tab to grab a full matching tier set in one click instead of slot by slot.
- Hit Apply and pay the gold cost. The price scales with your item level, so a fresh character pays much less than a fully geared one.
- Save the look as an Outfit so you can reapply it later in one click after upgrading gear.
Quick facts
- Appearances unlock the moment an item is looted, crafted, bought or quest-rewarded on any character that could equip it. You no longer need to actually wear it.
- The wardrobe is Warband-wide: your paladin's plate unlocks are visible to a new paladin instantly.
- Hidden appearances exist for head, shoulders, back, belt, bracers, gloves, boots and tabard, so you can "remove" a slot visually.
- Weapons can only be transmogged into weapons of the same type (a sword into a sword, a staff into a staff), with a few exceptions for shared skins.
- You can preview any outfit for free in the Collections window (default hotkey Shift+P, Appearances tab) before spending gold.
- Gear you dislike can be voided visually without changing its stats; transmog is purely cosmetic.
Where is the Transmogrifier in Midnight?
Every capital that has a Transmogrifier in earlier expansions still does: Stormwind (near the Cathedral square), Orgrimmar (Valley of Strength), Valdrakken, Dornogal and the older hubs. The Midnight expansion adds its own central city in Quel'Thalas, and like every new hub it houses the usual service NPCs. If you cannot spot the mirror icon straight away, open the map, use the NPC search for "Transmog" and the pin shows up.
Players who do a lot of looks-swapping usually keep a portable transmog option in their bags so they never leave the raid or dungeon to change appearance.
Did transmog rules change in Midnight?
The core system is unchanged from The War Within: loot-to-learn unlocks, Warband-shared collections, outfits and class-restricted appearances all carry over. What Midnight does add is player housing, which gives your outfits a second stage: your character stands in your own home wearing whatever you saved. Anything beyond that in the patch notes for the expansion is more recent than what can be confirmed here, so check the in-game Collections tab for new categories after each patch.
How do I collect more transmog appearances fast?
The fastest gains come from old raids on the highest difficulty you can solo (Legion and earlier are trivial at Midnight gear levels), Timewalking weeks for the era vendors, and world quests that hand out full sets. Crafting professions unlock every appearance of the items they make, and the auction house is packed with cheap green and blue pieces from old expansions whose appearances you likely have not learned. Equip or loot them once and the appearance is yours forever.
Why can't I transmog a specific item?
The usual reasons: the appearance belongs to a different armor class, the weapon type does not match (you cannot turn a dagger into an axe), the item is a legendary or artifact with special restrictions, or the piece is class-locked tier gear from another class. Cosmetic items flagged as such are the exception and work for everyone. If the item is grey text in the wardrobe, hover over it to see why.
Chasing rare sets across old raids and mythic difficulties takes hours of runs at the right lockout. If you would rather have a vetted human player collect a full look for you (no bots, no cheats, long zero-ban record), PewPewShop offers a Full Transmog Project from EUR 70, and Exploration & Loremaster help from EUR 15 for the achievement-locked appearances.
