The Mage Tower stands on the Broken Shore, the burning island at the center of the Broken Isles from Legion. Fly there from any Legion zone and look for the tall violet-lit spire near Deliverance Point. The tower is always on the map, but the solo challenges themselves only open during Legion Timewalking weeks.
Quick facts
- Zone: Broken Shore, part of the Broken Isles (Legion continent)
- Nearest hub: Deliverance Point, the Legion-era base camp on the island
- What to look for: a tall spire wrapped in violet magic — obvious from the air, hard to confuse with the fel ruins around it
- Who to talk to: Kalecgos, who waits at the base and hands out the challenges
- When it runs: Legion Timewalking weeks, which rotate through the year alongside the other Timewalking events
- Group size: solo only — no friends, no healer, no safety net
- Scaling: your character and gear are pulled down to a fixed power level, so out-gearing it is not the plan
- Encounters: seven of them, split so that tanks, healers, melee DPS and ranged DPS each have their own fight
How to get there, step by step
- Use the Legion portal in your faction capital's portal room to reach the Broken Isles.
- Open the Broken Isles map and select the Broken Shore — the scorched island in the middle.
- Fly or take the flight path to Deliverance Point.
- Head for the violet spire just outside camp and speak to the NPC at its base to see which challenges are currently available.
Why can't I start the Mage Tower right now?
Nine times out of ten it is the calendar, not a bug. The encounters only unlock while Legion Timewalking is the active event, so outside that week you can walk right up to the tower, talk to nobody useful, and leave.
The other common reason is spec. Each challenge is tied to a role, so if you show up as a healer during a week you want the ranged DPS fight, you swap specs first.
What do you actually get for clearing it?
The prize is transmog. Every spec that beats its challenge unlocks an artifact-style weapon appearance you cannot get any other way, which is why people still grind this years after Legion ended.
Clear all seven challenges and you also earn the Soaring Spelltome, the flying-book mount. That one takes multiple classes, not just multiple specs, so it is a long project for most players.
Is it still hard in the current expansion?
Yes. Because your power is squashed to a fixed level, new gear does not soften the fights the way it softens old raids. What matters is your cooldown planning, your defensives, and whether you know the encounter's timings.
Expect to wipe while learning. Most specs need consumables, a decent talent build, and a few honest attempts before the kill clicks.
Which classes have the easiest time?
Specs with strong self-healing, a hard defensive on a short cooldown, and reliable interrupts tend to have a smoother ride than pure glass-cannon builds. That said, every spec in the game has cleared its challenge — difficulty varies by fight, not by luck.
If a fight feels impossible, it is usually one mechanic being handled wrong rather than the whole encounter being out of reach.
