Nine times out of ten the Auction House is not broken — your realm is down for maintenance or Blizzard has temporarily disabled it. Weekly maintenance, rolling restarts and emergency hotfixes all lock the AH, usually with a shutdown countdown in chat. The other common causes: you are on a Classic Hardcore realm, on a Starter Edition or lapsed account, or standing at the wrong faction's auctioneer.
The six reasons the AH is closed, in order of likelihood
- Scheduled weekly maintenance. Realms go down on Tuesday mornings for North America and Wednesday mornings for Europe. The AH is one of the first services to stop accepting listings.
- Rolling restarts or an emergency hotfix. These are unannounced and short. If the AH broke right after a patch, Blizzard sometimes disables it deliberately while a pricing or duplication bug is fixed.
- You are on a Classic Hardcore realm. Hardcore rules remove the Auction House along with player trading and item mail. Nothing is broken — that is the ruleset.
- Trial, Starter Edition or lapsed subscription. Free and inactive accounts cannot post or buy on the AH. Resubscribing restores it immediately.
- Wrong auctioneer. In Classic, auction houses are faction-locked. Horde cannot use Stormwind, Alliance cannot use Orgrimmar. Neutral auctioneers sit in goblin towns such as Booty Bay, Gadgetzan and Everlook.
- A broken addon. After a patch, an outdated Auctionator or TradeSkillMaster can leave you staring at an empty or frozen window that looks closed.
How do I check whether the AH is actually down?
Open the official realm status page and the Blizzard Customer Support account on X — unplanned downtime is posted there within minutes. In-game, ask in guild or trade chat: if other players on your realm are also getting bounced, it is server-side and there is nothing to fix on your end.
If everyone else is trading normally, it is local. Log out fully, restart the client, and try again from a different capital city.
How long does maintenance usually last?
Standard weekly maintenance runs a few hours in the early morning of the affected region, and rolling restarts are far shorter — often under fifteen minutes. Extended maintenance for a major patch is announced ahead of time on the forums and in the launcher, so check there before you plan a big posting session.
The AH opens but shows no listings — is it still closed?
Usually not. Disable every addon, reload the interface, and search again with an empty filter. A stale addon database after a patch is the single most common cause of a blank auction list.
Also give commodity searches a few seconds. Stacks of reagents and consumables are pulled from a region-wide pool and can take a moment to populate after a restart.
Why can I browse but not post?
Check your gold first — posting costs a deposit that scales with the item and duration, and the button simply refuses if you are short. Beyond that, a full mailbox, an active trade restriction on a new account, or the tail end of a shutdown countdown will all block a listing while browsing still works.
If you would rather spend your play time raiding than refreshing an auction window, PewPewShop can help on the progression side — coaching and rent-a-pro runs with vetted human players, no bots or cheats. We also list Pandaria Classic gold from EUR 36 if your crafting plans are what is stuck waiting on the AH.
