Blizzard's October 15 beta development notes nerfed three hunter pet abilities in WoW: Forever. Crocolisk Dismember now cuts healing received by 25% for 6 seconds, down from the 50% in the Hunter deep dive. Bat Sonic Blast is now a 30% cast slow. Bird of Prey Mine! disarms for 3 seconds on a 90-second cooldown. These are beta changes and can still move before the November 4 launch.
Beta progress is temporary: beta gold is wiped on October 21. Launch gold has its own card. Launch gold (from November 4) · All Forever services

- Status: beta tuning. The beta ends October 21 and Forever launches November 4, 2026.
- Earlier pet change: the September 24 notes already cut the attack power bonus on Wolf's Furious Howl by 40%.
- Same build, other Hunter changes: Auto Shot (and wands) now needs you to stand still for 0.5 sec before firing, Trueshot Aura is raid-wide, and a Hunter can have one Fire trap and one Ice trap out at the same time.
Why did Blizzard nerf these three abilities?
Blizzard's notes give the new numbers but no designer explanation, so any reason is a guess. What the three have in common is that they hit hardest in PvP. A 50% healing cut, a disarm and a cast slow all counter other players, and none of them adds much to damage. Hunters still can't stun or interrupt and still have the 8-yard dead zone, so these pet tools were their main way to shut down an opponent.
Is a Crocolisk still worth taming for Dismember?
For PvP, probably yes. A 25% healing reduction still hurts healers and self-healing classes, but the uptime math has changed and it's now a supporting tool, not a fight-winner. For leveling and dungeons, family choice matters less than it used to. Pets now take their stats from the hunter's gear and no longer pick up player buffs, so the unique ability is what separates one family from another.
What is the best hunter pet in WoW: Forever?
Blizzard hasn't published family damage numbers, so no honest ranking exists yet. Choose by the job you need done:
- PvP pressure: Crocolisk (Dismember), Bird of Prey (Mine!) or Bat (Sonic Blast) against casters.
- Tanking packs while leveling: Bear (Swipe hits 3 targets) or Turtle (Shell Shield).
- Something new: the Fox, a new family. Its Trickster's Dance raises dodge chance and attack speed for 12 sec.
Every family also learns Bite or Claw and Dive or Dash, so the basic kit is the same across families. One more beta rule: Tame Beast no longer works on beasts above your level.
Should Marksmanship skip the pet entirely?
That's now a real option. Lone Wolf is the 11-point Marksmanship talent and gives 20% more damage when no pet is active. The September 24 notes removed the 4% damage penalty it used to leave when you summoned a pet. If you're Marksmanship in PvE and the nerfed pet utility doesn't matter to you, going without a pet is a valid build.
