Shadow is the spec to level with because it spends the least time drinking and healing. Blizzard's target for solo combat is roughly 10-15 seconds per ordinary creature, so mana and downtime decide your pace.
Discipline is the compromise. Penance is a 2-second channel on a 12-second cooldown that works on enemies and allies, but you give up Shadowform's mana savings. Holy is the slowest solo choice, since Holy Binding and Prayer of Mending exist for group healing.
What are the talent priorities by level?
Talents open at level 10, and the milestones arrive at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points. At one point per level, the 16-point milestone lands around level 25 and the 31-point milestone around level 40. The Legacy perk Talented can bring points up to 5 levels earlier.
Levels 10-20: what should Shadow take first?
Take Shadow Focus for Shadow hit and Improved Mind Flay as soon as the tree allows. At level 20 every Priest learns Fear Ward and Devouring Plague regardless of race, so train both and put them on your bars.
Levels 20-40: which talents matter most?
Vampiric Embrace is the priority because it turns Shadow damage into healing. Silence no longer needs Improved Psychic Scream, which makes it easier to fit into a leveling build. Then work toward Shadowform. Divine Spirit arrives as a baseline spell at 30 and Shadow Word: Death at 32.
Levels 40-60: where do the last points go?
Finish Shadow with Shadow Weaving, Early Demise and Devouring Contagion, which spreads Devouring Plague when its target dies. Dark Inspiration adds party Spirit if you group often. Use dual spec at 40 for a healing build, since Blizzard's large tuning pass may change the best choices here.
What changed for Priests from Classic?
The Forever Priest keeps its Classic foundation, but several racial and talent spells became baseline and every tree was reworked.
- Fear Ward and Devouring Plague are no longer racial spells.
- Divine Spirit no longer needs a talent.
- Fade's threat reduction is doubled.
- Renew can crit, and Renews from several Priests can stack on one target.
- Prayer of Healing heals the target's party and pets.
- Shadowform lets you cast all non-healing spells.
- Shadow Weaving benefits only the Priest who applies it.
- Lightwell, Improved Prayer of Healing and Force of Will are gone.
- Hit and crit are single stats across all schools, and caster weapons grant spell damage and healing.
Does downranking still work for Priests?
Downranking works worse than it did in Classic. Beta tooltips showed that ranks far below your level get less benefit from Spell Damage and Spell Healing, so low-rank heals save mana at a real cost in healing.
Which race is best for a Forever Priest?
Undead is the pick for Horde, and Human is the pick for Alliance healers. Six races can play Priest. Gnome is a new option, while Skyborne cannot be Priests.

Dark Sacrifice converts health into mana over time and scales with Spirit, which gives Undead Priests extra staying power. Contingency Plan is the most interesting Gnome tool: it triggers an absorb shield and a heal over time when the target falls below 35% health.
What role does a Priest fill in groups?
A Priest fills the healer slot first and ranged damage second, and every spec brings Divine Spirit and Fear Ward. These recommendations are PewPewShop's own, not Blizzard's.
- Dungeons: Holy. Holy Binding heals you and your target together on a 1.5-second cast with no cooldown.
- Raids: Holy for now. Prayer of Mending jumps up to 5 times, and Prayer of Healing covers a whole party. Raids open on December 9, so no raid logs exist and no spec ranking would be honest yet.
- PvP: Shadow. Silence, Vampiric Embrace and Fear Ward give you answers to casters and fear effects.
What mistakes do new Forever Priests make?
Most early Priest mistakes come from Classic habits and from action bars that no longer update themselves.
- Keeping old ranks on your bars. New spells are no longer added automatically, and a new rank may not replace the old one. Check your bars after every trainer visit.
- Moving while using a wand. The October 15 beta notes require you to stand still for 0.5 seconds before a wand fires.
- Respeccing casually. Talent changes need a class trainer in a major city, and Blizzard says the price climbs quickly and resets weekly.
- Relying on another Priest's Shadow Weaving. It only boosts its owner.
