World of Warcraft: Midnight has 11 primary professions: three gathering (Herbalism, Mining, Skinning) and eight crafting (Alchemy, Blacksmithing, Enchanting, Engineering, Inscription, Jewelcrafting, Leatherworking, Tailoring). Cooking and Fishing are secondary professions that every character can learn. A character can hold only two primary professions at a time, so the usual choice is a gathering profession plus the crafting profession that uses its materials.

  • Primary professions per character: two
  • Secondary professions: no limit, so every character can learn both
  • Midnight change: according to Blizzard's Midnight development notes, stackable reagents and consumables now come in 2 qualities (normal and high) instead of 3. Crafted equipment still has its quality ranks.
  • Housing: Blizzard's "Professions Unpacked" post says every crafting profession can make house decor for each expansion's version of that profession, using that expansion's reagents

What are the best profession pairs in Midnight?

The reliable pairs are the ones where one profession supplies the other: Herbalism + Alchemy, Mining + Blacksmithing, Mining + Jewelcrafting, Mining + Engineering and Skinning + Leatherworking. Since you gather your own reagents, leveling costs much less.

Tailoring + Enchanting is the classic exception. Tailors get cloth from mobs instead of from a gathering profession, and Enchanting can break their extra crafts down into materials. If you only want gold, two gathering professions (for example Herbalism + Mining) is the simplest setup, because you sell everything you collect.

Which profession is best for making gold?

Gathering professions make steady gold with almost no startup cost, since raw materials always sell. Crafting can earn more, but it takes time to build up recipes and a good sense of the market. Prices on each realm move with the season and with raid and Mythic+ demand, so look at your own Auction House before you commit.

Can I change professions later?

Yes. You can unlearn a primary profession at any time and pick up another one. Your skill in the dropped profession is lost, though, and you level the new one from scratch, so it's worth deciding before you spend a lot of materials.

What about Archaeology and First Aid?

First Aid was removed back in Battle for Azeroth, so it isn't in Midnight. Archaeology is still an old secondary skill from earlier expansions, but it isn't part of the current Midnight crafting system. For the modern game, Cooking and Fishing are the secondary professions that matter.
