In WoW Classic the best Horde mage race is Troll for raiding and Undead for PvP. Troll Berserking is a 10-30% casting speed cooldown that scales as your health drops, the biggest personal damage racial any Classic mage can get. Undead trade that damage for Will of the Forsaken, which breaks and blocks Fear, Charm and Sleep — priceless against Warlocks, Priests and Warriors.
Horde mage races in Classic at a glance
On Classic Era and the Anniversary realms the Horde has exactly two mage options. Orcs and Tauren cannot roll the class in vanilla rules, so the whole decision comes down to one trade-off: raw output or crowd-control defence.
| Race | Key racial | Best for |
| Troll | Berserking — casting speed up 10% at full health, scaling to 30% when badly hurt, 10 seconds, 3-minute cooldown | Raids, dungeon farming, AoE gold runs |
| Troll | Regeneration — faster health regen, part of it keeps ticking in combat; Beast Slaying — 5% extra damage to beasts | Levelling, solo farming |
| Undead | Will of the Forsaken — removes and briefly blocks Fear, Charm and Sleep, 2-minute cooldown | Battlegrounds, world PvP, duels |
| Undead | Cannibalize; Underwater Breathing; +10 Shadow Resistance | Utility, less downtime while questing |
Why Troll wins PvE
- Berserking stacks with Arcane Power, Mind Quickening Gem, Nature's Grace and trinket procs, so it shines in exactly the burst window raid mages already build around.
- Its cooldown lines up with roughly every second boss pull in Molten Core and Blackwing Lair, and every pull in a fast AQ40 or Naxx clear once you plan for it.
- Beast Slaying matters more than it sounds during levelling and in beast-heavy zones; a 5% edge on wolves, raptors and spiders adds up across sixty levels.
- Regeneration cuts eating time on long grinds, which is real gold-per-hour when you AoE farm as a Frost mage.
Why Undead wins PvP
- A Warlock's Fear, a Priest's Psychic Scream and a Warrior's Intimidating Shout are the three things that kill Classic mages most often. Will of the Forsaken answers all three on a short cooldown.
- Because it also grants a brief immunity, you can pop it pre-emptively when a Priest starts running toward you and simply keep casting.
- Cannibalize saves bandages and food between fights in Alterac Valley and Arathi Basin, keeping you in the action.
Is Troll or Undead better for a Frost mage?
Same split applies. A raiding Frost mage still wants Troll because Berserking speeds up Frostbolt chains during bursts. A PvP Frost mage lives on kiting and Polymorph control, and nothing ruins a kite faster than a Fear chain, so Undead remains the pick for battlegrounds and open-world fights.
How big is the actual damage difference?
Smaller than the forums suggest. Over a full raid tier, Berserking is worth a low-single-digit percentage of your total damage. That is enough to matter when you are chasing parses, but an Undead mage with better gear, timing and spell-batching awareness will still beat a Troll who wastes cooldowns. Choose Troll if you care about logs, Undead if you spend most evenings in Warsong Gulch.
Does the answer change in TBC Classic or later Classic versions?
Yes. Burning Crusade adds the Blood Elf mage, whose Arcane Torrent silence plus mana return makes it a serious PvP contender, while Troll stays the PvE damage race. Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria Classic open the class to Orcs and Goblins as well, and Goblin's Rocket Jump and Orc's Blood Fury rewrite the ranking again. For anything labelled Classic Era, Hardcore or 20th Anniversary, though, it is still Troll versus Undead.
Which race is better for Hardcore?
Troll, and it is not close. Regeneration reduces the sit-and-eat downtime that kills concentration, Beast Slaying speeds up the animal-heavy zones from Durotar through Stranglethorn, and Berserking can turn a bad pull around. Will of the Forsaken saves lives against Fear too, but in Hardcore the daily grind of faster, safer questing wins out.
