A WoW character boost is a single-use, account-bound upgrade that instantly raises one character to the current expansion's starting level. You use it from the character-select screen: choose an existing alt or make a fresh one, confirm the class and specialization, and it appears with placeholder gear, a full set of bags and some starting gold — but with no reputation, professions, campaign progress or endgame gear.

How to use a boost, step by step

  1. Log in and stop at the character-select screen for the realm you want the character on.
  2. Click the boost prompt (it shows as an available upgrade token, or use the option on a character you already own).
  3. Pick an existing character to boost, or create a brand-new one — you can boost a level 1 character you made ten seconds ago.
  4. Choose the specialization. This decides which armor and weapons the placeholder set gives you.
  5. Confirm. Reload the character list and the boosted character is ready to play.

The important part: a boost is a levelling shortcut, not a gearing shortcut. The gear it hands you is deliberately weak — enough to survive open-world questing, nowhere near what you need for current dungeons or raids. Where do boosts come from?

Blizzard bundles one with certain expansion editions and sells them separately on the in-game shop. They're granted to the account, so any character on any of your realms can use one — but each token is consumed the moment you confirm.

Can you boost a character that's already high level?

You can only boost a character below the boost's target level. If your character is already at or above it, the option is greyed out. There's no partial credit and no refund of the difference, so save tokens for low-level alts or a fresh roll of a class you've never played.

What should you do right after boosting?

Three things, in order. First, run the current expansion's campaign — it's the gate on most unlocks and hands you gear upgrades along the way. Second, chase catch-up gear from world content, weekly events and the season's entry-level dungeons. Third, level your professions, because a boost skips them entirely and they're where a lot of alt income lives.

Is a boost worth it if you've never played the class?

Honestly, it's a mixed bag. You get every ability at once with no ramp, which is brutal on classes with long rotations. If you boost a class you don't know, budget a few hours on a training dummy and some casual dungeons before you queue for anything that matters. Levelling teaches you the kit one button at a time; a boost hands you the whole keyboard.
