You don't buy a guild tabard from a regular vendor — the guild master must first purchase and design the tabard at a Guild Master NPC (a Guild Tabard Designer) for 10 gold. Once that one-time purchase is made, every member of the guild can buy their own copy of the finished tabard from the same NPC for 1 silver. Non-leaders cannot create or change the design.

  1. The guild leader travels to a capital city and finds the Guild Master NPC — the same NPC type used to register a guild charter. Every faction capital has one, usually near the bank or city hall district.
  2. Talk to the NPC and pick the tabard option. A design window opens with a preview model.
  3. Choose the emblem, emblem color, border style, border color and background color. Nothing is locked behind reputation or level — all options are available from the start.
  4. Accept and pay 10 gold. This is charged once, to the guild leader personally, and the design is saved to the guild.
  5. Every other member visits any Guild Master NPC and buys the Guild Tabard for 1 silver. It goes straight into their bags.

How much does a guild tabard cost in WoW Classic?

10 gold once for the guild leader to create the design, and 1 silver per member to buy a copy afterwards. Changing the design later costs the leader another 10 gold, so it's worth agreeing on colors with your officers before you click accept.

If your leader is short on gold, note that 10g is real money at level 30-40 in Classic. Many guilds pool a few silver each from members rather than making one person eat the whole cost.

Where is the Guild Master NPC in each capital?

Alliance players find them in Stormwind (Trade District area), Ironforge (Mystic Ward) and Darnassus. Horde players find them in Orgrimmar (Valley of Strength), Undercity and Thunder Bluff. If you're unsure, ask a guard for directions — the guard NPC in every capital gives a marked route to the guild registrar.

Does the guild tabard do anything besides look good?

In original Classic content it is purely cosmetic. There's no stat, no reputation bonus and no dungeon effect — it's a shirt-slot-style chest overlay that shows your guild colors. Reputation tabards that grant rep in dungeons are a later-expansion feature, not something you'll find in vanilla Classic.

Can I still wear it with my chest armor?

Yes. The tabard uses its own equipment slot, so it sits over your chest piece without replacing it or removing any stats. It does hide part of your chest model's artwork, which is why some players keep it in the bank until raid night or PvP.
