Onyxia attunement in WoW Classic means earning the Drakefire Amulet. Alliance players start with Dragonkin Menace in the Burning Steppes and finish by killing General Drakkisath in Upper Blackrock Spire. Horde players start with Warlord's Command in Kargath, Badlands, and must also complete Rexxar's Test of Skulls before Drakkisath. Expect several dungeon runs.
Quick facts
| Reward | Drakefire Amulet (it stays in your bags and lets you enter Onyxia's Lair) |
| Raid location | Onyxia's Lair, Wyrmbog, Dustwallow Marsh |
| Level | Plan on being level 60. The dungeon steps are endgame content |
| Dungeons needed | Alliance: Blackrock Depths and UBRS. Horde: LBRS and UBRS |
| Final kill (both factions) | General Drakkisath in Upper Blackrock Spire |
| Harder chain | Horde, because it has more travel and an extra item farm |
Alliance chain, step by step
- Dragonkin Menace: pick it up from Helendis Riverhorn at Morgan's Vigil in the Burning Steppes.
- The True Masters: report to Lakeshire, then to Highlord Bolvar Fordragon in Stormwind Keep, where you meet Lady Katrana Prestor.
- Marshal Windsor: find Windsor inside Blackrock Depths.
- Abandoned Hope → A Crumpled Up Note → A Shred of Hope: recover Windsor's lost information in BRD from Golem Lord Argelmach and General Angerforge.
- Jail Break!: escort Windsor out of the BRD prison. This is the step most groups wipe on.
- Stormwind Rendezvous → The Great Masquerade: return to Stormwind and watch Prestor's true identity come out.
- The Dragon's Eye → Drakefire Amulet: see Haleh at Mazthoril in Winterspring, kill Drakkisath in UBRS for the Blood of the Black Dragon Champion, then go back to Haleh for the amulet.
Horde chain, step by step
- Warlord's Command: from Warlord Goretooth in Kargath. In Lower Blackrock Spire, kill Highlord Omokk, War Master Voone and Overlord Wyrmthalak, and loot the Important Blackrock Documents.
- Eitrigg's Wisdom → For The Horde!: deliver the documents to Thrall in Orgrimmar, then kill Warchief Rend Blackhand in UBRS and bring back his head.
- What the Wind Carries → The Champion of the Horde: Thrall sends you to find Rexxar, who patrols Desolace.
- The Testament of Rexxar → Oculus Illusions: Myranda the Hag in Western Plaguelands needs 20 Black Dragonspawn Eyes, which drop from dragonspawn in UBRS.
- Emberstrife: wear the illusion and visit Emberstrife's den in the Wyrmbog, Dustwallow Marsh.
- The Test of Skulls: kill four dragons, Scryer (Winterspring), Somnus (Swamp of Sorrows), Chronalis (Tanaris) and Axtroz (Wetlands). Each one needs a group.
- Ascension → Blood of the Black Dragon Champion: kill Drakkisath in UBRS and take the blood to Rexxar for the amulet.
Does every raid member need the attunement?
Yes. Each player needs their own Drakefire Amulet to enter Onyxia's Lair. One attuned player can't bring the group in, so check this before raid night, not at the portal.
Do I need the UBRS key?
Upper Blackrock Spire on Classic realms is gated by the Seal of Ascension. At least one person in your group needs it to open the door. If your group already has a key holder, you don't need your own just for this chain.
Which steps take the longest?
For Alliance, it's the Jail Break! escort, which often takes more than one BRD run. For Horde, it's the 20 Black Dragonspawn Eyes plus the Test of Skulls, which sends you across both continents and needs a group for each dragon. Doing the dragons in a single grouped tour saves the most time.
Is there an Onyxia attunement in Retail WoW?
No. Onyxia's Lair in modern Retail is a legacy raid, and anyone can walk in. The attunement chains above matter on Classic-style realms, where the original requirement still applies.
If you'd rather spend your evenings raiding than repeating BRD escorts, PewPewShop's vetted players can run Blackrock Spire and the raid steps with you as play-together help. Classic Raid Clear starts from EUR 15. There are no bots and no cheats, and we have a long record with no bans.
