To level Skinning 1-375 in TBC, skin beasts in the starting zones up to about 75, then move through the Barrens or Westfall, Stranglethorn Vale, Tanaris and Feralas, and finish in Outland: Hellfire Peninsula, Zangarmarsh and Nagrand. Above level 20, the Skinning you need for a mob is its level times 5. Train each new rank as soon as you hit the cap.

Quick facts

  • Max skill: 375. At 375 you can skin anything up to level 75, so every beast in Outland is open to you.
  • The formula: for mobs level 20 and up, required skill = mob level x 5. Under level 20, it is (mob level - 10) x 10. A level 64 talbuk needs 320.
  • The tool: keep a Skinning Knife in your bags. Trainers and trade-goods vendors sell one cheaply.
  • Ranks cap out: Apprentice stops at 75, Journeyman at 150, Expert at 225, Artisan at 300. If you skip the trainer you stop gaining skill.
  • Scraps: five Knothide Leather Scraps combine into one Knothide Leather.

What is the fastest way to level Skinning in TBC?

Level it while you quest. Skinning has no reagent cost, and beasts in your questing zone usually match your skill when you train every rank on time. Players who finish 1-300 before Outland often get 300-375 done during Hellfire Peninsula and Zangarmarsh questing without any dedicated farming.

If you are catching up on an alt that is already 70, go straight to mobs that still give skill-ups, meaning yellow or orange on the tooltip. Grey and low-green mobs give little or nothing.

Where is the best place to skin from 300 to 375?

Start in Hellfire Peninsula on the boars, ravagers and other beasts near the entry zones. Around 330-350, move to Zangarmarsh and Nagrand. Nagrand is the usual favorite: talbuks and clefthoof are packed close together, respawn quickly and drop Knothide Leather plus Thick Clefthoof Leather, which leatherworkers want. The Master trainer is in Outland at the Horde and Alliance bases in Hellfire Peninsula.

Is Skinning worth it in TBC Anniversary?

As a moneymaker, yes. It costs nothing to level, pairs well with Leatherworking, and Knothide Leather plus Fel Hide stay in demand for crafted gear, armor kits and leg armor. With Phase 3 live since August 27, 2026, raiders still buy leather for consumables and patterns, so your sale prices depend on your realm's market.

Should I pair Skinning with Leatherworking or another gathering profession?

Pair it with Leatherworking if you want the crafted gear and drums. If you only want gold, pair it with Mining or Herbalism. Two gathering professions let you farm and sell at the same time, and Skinning fits in naturally because you already kill beasts while questing.
