“WoW Anniversary Edition” is not a separate game you buy — it is what players call Blizzard's 20th-anniversary content, released around World of Warcraft's 20th birthday in November 2024. The name covers three different things: the fresh-start Classic Anniversary realms, the in-game anniversary celebration event on retail, and an optional physical Collector's Edition box.
The three things people actually mean

Do I need to buy anything to play the Anniversary realms?
No. If you have an active World of Warcraft subscription, the Classic Anniversary realms are already on your realm list — the same subscription covers retail, Classic Era and the Anniversary servers. The Collector's Edition box is a separate, optional purchase and does not unlock any realm.

Is it the same as WoW Classic Era or Season of Discovery?
No. Classic Era realms are permanently parked on the final vanilla patch with no new content. Season of Discovery added invented abilities and reworked encounters.
