Heirlooms are upgraded at a Heirloom Curator vendor, not at an upgrade bench: buy the matching Heirloom Armor Casing (armor) or Heirloom Scabbard (weapons) with gold, then use it to raise one heirloom's level cap by one tier. Upgrades are permanent and account-wide, and the Collections > Heirlooms tab shows which tier each piece is still missing.

Upgrade an heirloom in five steps

  1. Open Collections (Shift+P) and click the Heirlooms tab. Hover a piece — the tooltip tells you the level it currently scales to.
  2. Fly to a Heirloom Curator: Krom Stoutarm in the Hall of Explorers, Ironforge (Alliance), or Estelle Gendry on the Horde side in Orgrimmar. They sell the heirlooms themselves and every upgrade token.
  3. Buy the token for the next tier your piece needs. Armor Casings cover armor, cloaks, necks, rings and trinkets; Scabbards cover weapons.
  4. Use the token. It consumes itself and lifts that one heirloom by one tier.
  5. Repeat per item and per tier. Tiers cannot be skipped, and every piece is upgraded separately.

What trips people up

  • Tokens cost gold only — no reputation, no currency, no unlock quest.
  • One token = one item, one tier. A full 8-10 piece set taken to the newest cap is a serious gold sink.
  • The upgrade lives in your collection, so it is instantly live for every alt on the account, any class, any realm.
  • Each expansion has added a new top tier sold by the same curators. If your set stops at the last expansion's ceiling, check the vendor list for a newer casing rather than assuming you are done.
  • If a piece already scales past the level of the alt wearing it, another tier changes nothing for that character right now.

Where do you upgrade heirlooms in Midnight?

Same two vendors as always — Ironforge for the Alliance, Orgrimmar for the Horde. Nothing was moved into the Midnight zones, which is exactly why people search for it: you hearth or portal back to an old-world capital, buy the casing, and fly straight back out.

How much gold does an heirloom upgrade cost?

Expect a few hundred gold for the earliest tiers and several thousand for the newest one, per item. The price climbs with every tier, so the last step of a full set costs more than the first four combined. Budget for the pieces you actually level in — usually weapon, chest and shoulders — instead of buying everything at once.

Which heirlooms should I upgrade first?

Weapon first. A leveling weapon carries more of your damage than any other slot, and a capped-out weapon is the difference between three-shotting a mob and grinding it down. Chest and shoulders next, then trinkets. Rings and cloak are the last things worth spending on.

Do heirloom upgrades apply to all my characters?

Yes. Heirlooms and their upgrades are account-wide by design — you buy the tier once and every current and future alt pulls the upgraded version out of the Collections tab. That is what makes them worth the gold if you level more than one or two characters per expansion.
