AOTC stands for "Ahead of the Curve" — a feat of strength achievement in World of Warcraft awarded for killing the final boss of a raid tier on Heroic difficulty before the next raid tier releases. Once that window closes, the achievement becomes unobtainable forever. It is the community's shorthand for "this player raided current content and finished it."
You will see it written as AOTC, aotc, or spelled out in group finder listings: "AOTC only", "link AOTC". It is a filter, not an insult — people use it as a quick way to gauge whether you have cleared the tier before.
AOTC quick facts
- Full name: Ahead of the Curve, followed by the final boss's name (the achievement is renamed each tier).
- Requirement: Defeat the last boss of the current raid on Heroic difficulty.
- Deadline: Before the next raid tier opens. After that, the achievement is retired.
- Type: Feat of Strength — it awards no achievement points.
- Reward: Most tiers grant a limited-time mount; some have granted a title instead. Rewards do not carry into later tiers.
- Loot difficulty: Heroic sits above Normal and below Mythic, so AOTC does not mean a Mythic clear.
The related achievement: CE
AOTC has a harder sibling. "Cutting Edge" (CE) is the same idea one difficulty up — killing the final boss on Mythic before the next tier lands. CE is rare and guild-level hard; AOTC is achievable by any organised group that shows up consistently for a few weeks.
How hard is AOTC to get?
Moderate. Heroic raiding expects you to know your rotation, handle mechanics without dying repeatedly, and hold a reasonable item level for the tier. The final boss is usually a multi-week project for a fresh group and a one-night farm for an experienced one late in the patch.
The bigger obstacle is scheduling. Most AOTC runs come from guilds or premade groups raiding a fixed night or two per week. If you have no static group, pugs on group finder do clear Heroic — they just get pickier as the tier ages.
Can I still get AOTC from an old raid?
No. Once the following raid tier is live, that tier's Ahead of the Curve is permanently gone. You can still kill the boss on Heroic for transmog, mounts and the normal raid achievement, but the feat of strength and its reward will not appear. This is exactly why the reward mounts hold status — nobody can farm them later.
Why do groups ask for AOTC?
It is a cheap trust signal. Linking the current tier's AOTC tells a raid leader you have already seen every Heroic encounter and finished the hardest one, which says more about you than item level alone. Some leaders ask for AOTC from the previous tier too, as evidence you raid consistently rather than once.
Does AOTC affect Mythic+ or PvP?
Not mechanically. It is purely a raid achievement and grants nothing outside of it. Its only crossover is social: dungeon and PvP groups sometimes read AOTC as a general sign that you play current content seriously.
