For soloing old raids, Retribution Paladin, Blood Death Knight and Beast Mastery Hunter are the strongest all-round farmers. Ret and Blood combine heavy self-healing with AoE damage, so they survive scripted burst that kills squishier specs; BM Hunter farms safely from range with a tanking pet. Vengeance Demon Hunter is the fastest at pure trash pulls.
Why these classes win at legacy farming
Old-raid clearing is not a damage race. Modern characters overkill nearly everything up through Legion, so the real bottlenecks are mechanics that ignore your gear: fights that force healing checks, bosses that need two targets hit at once, and encounters gated behind a mechanic a solo player physically can't cover. The classes below solve those problems, not the damage one.

What actually matters when you pick
- Self-sustain over DPS. A spec that heals itself never wipes to a mechanic it can't dodge alone.
- Movement speed. Half of a legacy run is travel. Mobility specs finish a full-clear loop noticeably faster.
- A pet or a second body. Several old encounters expect someone to hold an add or stand on a second point. A hunter pet quietly solves a lot of these.
- Mass loot and skinning. If the raid is a transmog/gold farm, a skinner earns extra per run for free.
- Bosses with hard gates. A handful of encounters simply can't be soloed regardless of class — bring a second player rather than a different spec.
Is Hunter or Paladin better for solo old raids?
Paladin is safer in melee-heavy content and against healing checks; Hunter is safer in fights with heavy ground damage or mechanics you'd rather watch from 40 yards. If you only level one farming character, Retribution Paladin covers more raids without changing tactics.
Hunter pulls ahead in older raids full of adds and in anything you want to do half-attentively while multitasking — the pet holds aggro while you reposition.
Do I need max level and current gear?
Max level does most of the work. A fresh max-level character with quest-tier gear can already flatten several expansions' worth of raids; each additional tier just cuts the clear time. Gear only becomes a real requirement for the most recent legacy content, where scaling still bites.

For pure speed across many wings, Vengeance Demon Hunter or a well-geared Havoc DH clears trash fastest thanks to mobility and mass pulls. For raids you want to run reliably without any deaths or resets, Blood DK is the slower but near-zero-risk option. Both benefit hugely from a mass-loot setup and running several raids per lockout cycle.
Should I farm on one character or several?
Weekly lockouts cap what one character can pull, so serious farmers rotate two or three alts through the same raids. Your main farmer should be the tankiest option; your alts can be squishier speed specs, since they'll be running content you've already proven is safe.
