The best Death Knight race in WoW Midnight is Troll or Orc on Horde and Dwarf or Dark Iron Dwarf on Alliance. Troll's Berserking gives a 10% haste burst, Orc's Blood Fury adds attack power and trims stun duration, while both Dwarf flavours bring extra critical damage and a cleanse that strips bleeds, poisons and curses. The spread between the strongest and weakest pick is about 1% of your damage, so utility and personal taste are fair tiebreakers.
Death Knight racials at a glance
| Race | Faction | Why it helps a DK |
| Troll | Horde | Berserking: 10% haste for 12s on a 3-min cooldown; 20% less movement-slow duration. Best raw burst for Unholy and Frost. |
| Orc | Horde | Blood Fury: attack power cooldown that lines up with Pillar of Frost or Dark Transformation; stuns last 20% less. |
| Blood Elf | Horde | Arcane Torrent refunds Runic Power and purges an enemy buff; 1% crit. Strong in M+ and PvP. |
| Tauren | Horde | 2% extra crit damage plus War Stomp AoE stun — a solid Blood DK pick for keys. |
| Dwarf | Alliance | 2% crit damage; Stoneform clears bleeds, poison, disease, curse and magic effects and cuts damage taken. |
| Dark Iron Dwarf | Alliance | Fireblood removes the same debuff types and grants a primary-stat buff — the Alliance damage pick. |
| Human | Alliance | 2% to all secondary stats plus a stun break on a cooldown. Close to Dwarf in PvE, better in PvP. |
| Earthen | Both | Bonus armor, a self-heal, and a permanent well-fed effect with no food. Sturdy for Blood, middling for DPS. |
Ranking by spec
- Unholy: Troll (haste feeds Festering Wounds and pet uptime), then Orc. Alliance: Dark Iron or Dwarf.
- Frost: Orc and Troll are within a rounding error; Orc's Blood Fury stacks cleanly under Pillar of Frost. Alliance: Dwarf.
- Blood (tank): Tauren for the stun and crit damage, Dwarf for the cleanse, Earthen for flat armor. Tank racials matter for survival, not the meter.
- PvP: Human (Will to Survive) and Orc (stun reduction) are the two that actually change duels. Blood Elf's purge is a bonus for Frost.
These rankings follow the racials as they stood through The War Within into Midnight. Blizzard occasionally retunes a single racial in a patch, so if you are chasing the last 0.3%, run a quick sim on your own character before you buy a race change.
Does race really matter for Death Knight in Midnight?
Not much. Across a full raid fight, the best and worst racial for a DPS DK differ by about 1% — smaller than one upgraded trinket or a clean cooldown alignment. Where race does matter is utility: a Dwarf cleanse on a bleed-heavy boss, an Orc shrugging off part of a stun in arena, a Tauren stomp interrupting a caster pack. Choose for those moments rather than the sim bar.
Best Horde race for Death Knight: Troll or Orc?
Troll for Unholy, Orc for Frost, and honestly either is fine for both. Berserking's haste is a bigger throughput swing on a spec that stacks wounds and pet attacks; Blood Fury's attack power lines up better with Frost's Pillar window. Orc also gets the stun reduction, which is the single most useful passive in PvP for a class without many escape tools.
Best Alliance race for Death Knight?
Dark Iron Dwarf for damage, regular Dwarf if you value the damage-reduction side of Stoneform, Human for PvP. Void Elf and Night Elf are still playable — Shadowmeld can drop threat or reset a pull — but they lose a little sustained damage. Mechagnome's stacking primary stat is competitive on single-target and awkward on anything that moves.
Can Earthen or the newer races be Death Knights?
Earthen can, on both factions, and their armor and no-food buff make them a comfortable Blood DK. For any race added with Midnight itself, check the in-game character creation screen: class availability for new races is set per race and I would rather you confirm it there than take a guess from me.
