You can play World of Warcraft for free indefinitely, but only up to level 20. The Starter Edition has no trial clock — it never expires — yet it caps your character at level 20, holds your gold at 10, blocks trading, mail, guilds and public chat, and locks every modern expansion. Everything past that point needs an active subscription.
What the free version actually gives you
- Level cap: 20. Experience simply stops accruing.
- Time limit: none. The Starter Edition is not a countdown trial — play as long as you like.
- Gold cap: 10 gold. Excess is held until you subscribe.
- Blocked: trading, the Auction House, mail, guild membership, party invites to non-trial players in some cases, and most public chat channels.
- Available: the classic leveling zones of Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms, early dungeons, and low-level Battlegrounds.
- Character slots: you can roll multiple alts and level each of them to 20.
Why level 20 is the wall
Level 20 is roughly the end of a character's starting arc — you have your core rotation, your first talent choices, and one or two dungeon runs behind you. Blizzard sets the cap there deliberately: it's enough to know whether you like a class, and nowhere near enough to touch endgame. Current retail content sits far above it, so raiding, Mythic+, current-season PvP and modern zones are entirely subscription territory.
Is the free trial the same as WoW Classic?
No. The Starter Edition applies to modern retail WoW. Classic and its progression realms are included with an active subscription, not with the free account — the same monthly fee covers both retail and Classic, but neither Classic version is playable on the free tier.
Do I lose my characters if I stop paying?
You don't. Characters above level 20 stay on your account permanently; they're simply locked from play until you resubscribe. Nothing is deleted, no gear decays, and your gold and bags are exactly where you left them. A lapsed account reverts to Starter Edition restrictions, so you can still log in and play a fresh character to 20.
Can I pay for WoW with in-game gold instead of money?
Yes — through the WoW Token, bought from the Auction House with gold and redeemed for game time. That's the legitimate gold-to-subscription route, and it's the reason a well-funded character can effectively play indefinitely without a card. The catch: a free account can't hold more than 10 gold or use the Auction House, so you need an active subscription first to build the gold that pays for later months.
What's the fastest way from level 20 to endgame?
Once you subscribe, the leveling curve to current cap is far quicker than it was years ago — heirloom gear, the streamlined Chromie Time campaigns, and dungeon spam all cut it down considerably. Most players get there in a handful of evenings rather than weeks.
If you've hit the level 20 wall and would rather skip the grind between there and current-season content, PewPewShop's vetted human players can handle the progression side — leveling, gearing and a gold cushion together in a Season Starter Pack from EUR 107, or straight coaching if you'd rather learn the class yourself. No bots, no cheats, and a long clean record.
