Onyxia is fought in Onyxia's Lair, a cave in Wyrmbog at the far south of Dustwallow Marsh on Kalimdor. In Classic you cannot walk in cold: the door checks for the Drakefire Amulet, earned through a faction-specific attunement chain that sends you into Blackrock Depths and Upper Blackrock Spire. Once attuned, a 40-player raid handles her three phases — she is on the ground, takes flight at 65% health, then lands again at 40% and starts fearing the raid.

Step-by-step: from zero to Onyxia dead

  1. Reach level 60. The attunement quests and the raid itself are end-game content; you also want pre-raid gear from dungeons like Scholomance, Stratholme and UBRS.
  2. Do the attunement. Alliance: follow Marshal Windsor through Blackrock Depths (the "Jail Break!" escort), witness the reveal in Stormwind Keep, then fly to Haleh in Winterspring, who sends you to kill General Drakkisath in UBRS. Horde: work through Warlord Goretooth's orders in Lower and Upper Blackrock Spire, bring Rend Blackhand's head to Thrall, meet Rexxar, then handle Emberstrife in Dustwallow and the four drake trials across Azeroth before Rexxar hands over the amulet.
  3. Travel to Wyrmbog. Fly to Theramore (Alliance) or Brackenwall Village (Horde), ride south past the Stonemaul ogres and follow the road into the dragonkin-infested hills. The lair entrance is a cave in the cliff face.
  4. Clear the whelp caves carefully. Inside, the two side caves are packed with whelps. Do not pull them early — they spawn again in Phase 2 anyway.
  5. Phase 1 (100–65%). The tank positions Onyxia facing away from the raid, along the back wall. Melee stay on her flanks — the front has Flame Breath and Wing Buffet, the rear has Tail Sweep that knocks people into the whelp caves.
  6. Phase 2 (65–40%). She lifts off, throws fireballs and periodically winds up Deep Breath, a wall of fire across the room. Everyone spreads out at the edges, ranged DPS burn her, and the tank group picks up the waves of whelps pouring from both caves.
  7. Phase 3 (40–0%). She lands, keeps the Phase 1 mechanics, and adds Bellowing Roar — a raid-wide fear — plus lava eruptions from the cracks in the floor. Fear Ward and Tremor Totem on the tank are the difference between a clean kill and a wipe.

How long does the Onyxia attunement take?

Plan for one long evening if your group already has BRD and UBRS runs lined up, or two to three sessions if you are organising them yourself. The Alliance chain is dungeon-heavy but linear; the Horde chain involves more travel, including a trip to Dustwallow and four drakes scattered across the world.

The amulet is a permanent quest reward, so once it is done you never repeat it on that character.

Can you solo or 5-man Onyxia in Classic?

Not in Classic-era tuning. She is a 40-player raid boss with a raid-wide fear and adds that overwhelm small groups. Undersized clears do happen with very well-geared, well-coordinated raids of twenty-plus at later gear levels, but a fresh guild should bring a full roster.

What does Onyxia drop?

Her standout loot is the Tier 2 helmet set (one for every class) and the Head of Onyxia. The head is a quest item: hand it in at Stormwind or Orgrimmar and you pick a neckpiece reward while the whole city receives the Rallying Cry of the Dragonslayer buff — one of the best temporary raid buffs in Classic. She also drops an epic mount-free but useful assortment of weapons and trinkets, and Mature Black Dragon Sinew for the Hunter epic quest chain.

How often can you kill Onyxia?

Her lockout is shorter than Molten Core's: Onyxia reset on a 5-day timer in original Classic, so guilds often fit two kills into a fortnight. Rulesets differ, so check your realm's raid reset in the raid info window before committing to a schedule.

If your guild keeps stalling on attunements or you just want the Head without the roster wrangling, PewPewShop's vetted human players can run the attunement dungeons with you (Classic Dungeon Boost from EUR 10.5) or bring you along on a Classic Raid Clear from EUR 15 — no bots, no cheats, and a long zero-ban record.
