The current max level in retail World of Warcraft is level 90, introduced with Midnight on March 2, 2026 (The War Within capped at 80). You reach it through standard questing from a fresh start, then real character power comes from gear item level, Renown with the expansion's factions, and seasonal Mythic+ and raid progression. WoW Classic realms use different caps depending on the version you play.

How long does it take to reach max level in WoW?

From a brand-new character, most players reach level 90 by following the Midnight campaign zones, faster with rested XP. If you already have a level 90 on your account, alts level noticeably quicker thanks to account-wide bonuses and better zone knowledge.

What do you do after hitting max level?

At 90 you shift from XP to gear. That means the current season's Mythic+ dungeons, raids, delves, PvP, and grinding Renown for reputation rewards. Your goal becomes raising item level and unlocking end-game systems rather than chasing another level number.

Does the max level change with new expansions?

Yes. Blizzard adjusts the cap with most expansions, sometimes raising it and occasionally squishing the numbers to keep leveling snappy. Whenever a new expansion drops, expect a fresh leveling zone and, usually, a higher cap to climb toward.
