Talebound demo at a glance

The demo is a three-day window on the 12.1.7 Public Test Realm. It covers the mode's opening content and all three of its classes. Blizzard says several talents are still unfinished and that PTR content may change before release.

How to join the Talebound demo

To join, install the PTR through the Battle.net app and log in during the demo window. Because no subscription is needed, a lapsed account can play too.

  1. Open the Battle.net app and pick World of Warcraft.
  2. In the game version dropdown, choose the Public Test Realm and install it. This is a separate client from live.
  3. Launch it between October 30 and November 1, 2026.
  4. Create a character and go into Talebound. In the full mode you start in the town of Quillgrave, and the demo opens with the Red Hollow introduction.

What are the Talebound classes?

Talebound has its own three classes, separate from WoW's normal ones. The Slayer fights with a sword and a gun. The Inquisitor uses holy fire. The Witch has the widest toolkit: lightning, poison, spiders, moonlight, thorns and ravens.

ClassToolsWho it suits
SlayerSword and gunPlayers who want a mix of melee and ranged
InquisitorHoly firePlayers who like one clear damage theme
WitchLightning, poison, spiders, moonlight, thorns, ravensPlayers who enjoy juggling many effects

All three classes can double jump, dodge and guard. Movement and defence work the same way for everyone. What sets the classes apart is how they deal damage.

What are the three tales in the demo?

The demo has three tales: Darkhaven, Greenthistle Wood and Greywake's Expedition. Each one can be played on Normal, Veteran or Heroic. That makes nine combinations to try over the three days, plus the Red Hollow introduction.

In practice, start each tale on Normal so you learn its layout. Then move up to Veteran with the class that felt best. Save Heroic for when your build is working, because talents in the demo are still being finished and a bad run may not be your fault.

Is Talebound part of normal WoW or a separate game?

Talebound is a standalone roguelite mode inside World of Warcraft, coming with Patch 12.1.7. It has its own classes and its own starting town, Quillgrave, so it does not replace your Midnight character's progression. The demo is a preview of the mode, not the full release.

What rewards does Talebound give?

On the 12.1.7 PTR, the full Talebound mode lists four titles and the Shadowbound Storybook mount. Dataminers also found a toy, the Hexed Tiny Tome, listed as dropping from Talebound. It looks like it lets your companion pet ride along on a flying book. Blizzard has not confirmed this toy.

Other datamined PTR files list four Warband-bound potions named after Talebound stories, each giving +30% experience for 2 hours. These are not confirmed either. PTR progress stays on the test realm, so nothing you earn in the demo carries over to live.

When does Patch 12.1.7 release?

Blizzard has not announced a release date for Patch 12.1.7. Right now the patch is on the PTR. Besides Talebound, it includes four new Lorewalking stories, and each one rewards a readable lore book as housing decor. Until a date is posted, any specific day you see is a guess.

Patch 12.1.5 is the current live content. It added the single-boss raid The Unbinding of Kith'ix and the Labyrinth of Kindo'jan, a nine-chamber mega-dungeon that plays like a Delve with Valeera Sanguinar as your companion. If you like run-based content and want something to do before Talebound launches, the Labyrinth is the closest thing on live servers.
