In most cases the boost is not lost — it is sitting on a different WoW account, or the realm you are looking at has no free character slot. Verify the Midnight upgrade was applied to the WoW account you actually log into, in the correct region, fully close and relaunch the client, then check character select again.

Run this checklist in order

  1. Check which WoW account got the upgrade. One Battle.net account can hold several WoW accounts (WoW1, WoW2 and so on). The boost attaches to the single licence the edition upgrade was applied to. Open Battle.net Account Settings, look at your WoW licences and your order history, and log in on that exact account.
  2. Check the region. A purchase made on EU does nothing on US characters, and vice versa. Switch region in the Battle.net launcher before you panic.
  3. Restart properly. Log out to character select, quit the game completely, then log out of the Battle.net app and back in. Entitlements are cached, and a client that was open during the purchase often never sees them.
  4. Free up a character slot. The boost creates or promotes a character, so a realm that is at its character limit — or an account at its overall cap — will simply not offer the button. Delete or move one character and re-check.
  5. Pick an eligible character. The target must be under the level the boost grants. Hero classes that start above level one, and characters that were recently transferred, renamed or faction-changed, are commonly blocked for a short cooldown.
  6. Make sure the character is idle. Logged in on another device, sitting in a login queue, or inside an instance or battleground — all of these can make the service refuse.
  7. Read the edition terms. Some upgrades hand over the boost the moment you buy; others unlock it on a set date. If yours is the second kind, nothing is broken yet.

Why does the Midnight level boost say "internal error"?

That message is generic. It fires both when Blizzard's character services are overloaded — very common in the first days of an expansion — and when the boost cannot complete for the character you picked.

Try a different eligible character on a different realm. If that works, the first character was the problem. If it fails everywhere, wait 20-30 minutes and retry before opening a ticket; the boost is not consumed by a failed attempt.

Where is the boost supposed to appear?

On the character select screen, as a boost prompt next to your character list or on an empty slot. You can also reach character services through the in-game Shop once you are logged in on the correct WoW account.

I boosted the wrong character — can it be undone?

Sometimes. Stop playing that character immediately, do not spend the boost gear or currency, and open a Blizzard support ticket right away. Reversals are handled case by case and are never guaranteed, so treat the confirm dialog as final.

Still nothing after all of that?

Open a ticket under Games & Services with your order number and the WoW account name. Missing entitlements are one of the fastest ticket categories Blizzard handles, and a boost that was paid for but never delivered is recoverable.
