Battleground Blitz Apprentice is an entry-level milestone on the Battleground Blitz achievement track — the 8v8 rated brawl you queue for solo or with one friend at max level. It is the first rung of the ladder: play rated Blitz, win matches, climb rating. The same queue leads to higher rungs and the seasonal Strategist title at 2400 rating.
One honest caveat up front: the exact threshold behind the Apprentice step (a win count or a rating number) is not something I can confirm word-for-word, and Blizzard has tweaked PvP achievement tracks between seasons. Open your Achievements pane, go to Player vs. Player, and look under the Battleground Blitz section — the live tooltip shows the current requirement and your progress bar toward it.
Battleground Blitz at a glance
- Format: 8 vs 8, shortened battleground objectives, matches usually run 10–15 minutes.
- Queue: solo, or as a duo with one friend. No 10-player group required.
- Requirement: a max-level character. Rated Blitz sits in the Rated tab of the PvP window next to Solo Shuffle and 2v2/3v3.
- Rating: separate from Arena, Solo Shuffle and 10v10 Rated Battlegrounds. Your Blitz MMR only moves in Blitz.
- Rewards: Conquest and Honor per match, weekly Great Vault PvP slots, Vicious mount progress from wins, and rating-gated achievements up to the Strategist title at 2400.
- Apprentice: the low rung on that achievement track — the goal when you are just getting started.
How to start working toward Apprentice
- Hit max level and grab a starter Honor gear set from the PvP quartermaster so you are not walking in with 20k less HP than everyone else.
- Open the PvP window, choose the Rated tab, and select Battleground Blitz. Queue alone or invite one friend to your party first.
- Pick a spec that carries in 8v8: healers with mobility, flag carriers with defensives, and ranged with strong node pressure all queue faster and win more.
- Play the objective, not the scoreboard. Blitz maps are compressed versions of Warsong Gulch, Arathi Basin, Eye of the Storm and similar — capping and defending decides games, killing blows do not.
- Check the achievement after every session. Once the bar fills, Apprentice pops and the next rung on the track becomes your new target.
Is Blitz Apprentice the same as Combatant or Rival?
No. Combatant, Challenger, Rival, Duelist and Elite are the classic rating tiers for Arena and Solo Shuffle. Battleground Blitz has its own achievement line and its own top-end title, Strategist, awarded for 2400 Blitz rating and enough wins at that level. Apprentice-style steps sit far below that — think of them as the on-ramp, not the summit.
How much rating do you need for the Strategist title?
2400 Battleground Blitz rating during the current season. That is the one number on this track I am comfortable quoting outright, because it has been the Blitz equivalent of Elite since the mode went rated. It is a seasonal title, so it must be re-earned each season.
Can I queue Battleground Blitz with a friend?
Yes — Blitz supports duo queue. Party up with one friend, both of you at max level, and the group leader queues from the Rated tab. Anything bigger than two players is routed to Rated Battlegrounds (10v10), which is a different bracket with a different rating.
Does Blitz count toward the Vicious mount?
Yes. Rated Blitz wins feed the same Vicious Saddle progress bar as Arena, Solo Shuffle and RBG wins, so grinding toward Apprentice and beyond also moves you toward the seasonal Vicious mount.
Quick comparison: Blitz vs Rated Battlegrounds
| Mode | Team size | Queue | Top title |
| Battleground Blitz | 8v8 | Solo or duo | Strategist (2400) |
| Rated Battlegrounds | 10v10 | Full premade group | Hero of the Alliance / Horde |
