The Shadowforge Key is the reward for the quest Dark Iron Legacy in Blackrock Depths. Die inside Blackrock Mountain, and while you are still a ghost speak to Franclorn Forgewright on the Molten Span above the BRD entrance. He sends you to kill Fineous Darkvire, loot his hammer Ironfel, and place it in the hands of Franclorn's statue inside the dungeon — the key is handed over on the spot.
Step by step: Dark Iron Legacy
- Become a ghost. Franclorn Forgewright is a spirit and only ghosts can see him. The easiest way is to die anywhere inside Blackrock Mountain (jump into the lava or let a mob finish you) and run back from the graveyard — do not resurrect yet.
- Find Franclorn. While dead, head to the Molten Span, the big stone ring and bridge structure above the Blackrock Depths entrance. He stands on the span. Accept Dark Iron Legacy from him.
- Resurrect and enter BRD. Take your spirit healer res or run back to your corpse, then zone into the dungeon with a group.
- Kill Fineous Darkvire. The Chief Architect is a named Dark Iron boss in the first half of the instance. He always drops Ironfel for players on the quest.
- Deliver Ironfel to the statue. Right-click the statue of Franclorn Forgewright inside Blackrock Depths and place the hammer in its hands. The quest completes there and you receive the Shadowforge Key immediately.

What does the Shadowforge Key actually open?
It opens the Shadowforge Lock doors inside Blackrock Depths. In practice that means the gate right by the entrance that skips the Detention Block, the locked gates that shortcut you through the dungeon toward Shadowforge City, and the doors on the route to the Grim Guzzler and the Emperor. One keyholder in the group is enough — they open the door and everyone walks through.
Without the key you either need a rogue with high Lockpicking to open the doors, or you take the long way around through the Detention Block and Ring of Law every single run. For a dungeon as sprawling as BRD, the key saves a lot of time.
Why can't I see Franclorn Forgewright?
Because you are alive. Franclorn is a ghost, so he is only visible and interactable while your character is a spirit. If you released and then accepted resurrection at the spirit healer before talking to him, he vanishes. Release, run to the Molten Span as a ghost, talk to him first, then go back for your body.
A second common mistake is looking in the wrong spot. He is outside the dungeon portal, up on the span structure in the middle of the mountain, not inside Blackrock Depths itself.
Is the Shadowforge Key needed for Molten Core attunement?
No. Molten Core attunement is a separate quest (Attunement to the Core) that starts with Lothos Riftwaker at the Molten Core entrance and requires the Core Fragment from the far end of Blackrock Depths. The Shadowforge Key is not required for it, though having it makes reaching the fragment faster since you can skip the front half of the instance.
What level should I be to do this?
The quest is aimed at the mid-50s, the same range as Blackrock Depths itself. You can pick it up as soon as you can reach the Molten Span, but you will need a real group to get through the dungeon to Darkvire and the statue. A level 60 party clears the required stretch comfortably.
Does the key carry over between Classic versions?
The quest and the key exist in Classic Era, Hardcore, and the Anniversary realms because Blackrock Depths is unchanged there. In later Classic expansions the dungeon is still present and the key still works, though the doors matter far less once you outlevel the content.
If you would rather have the run handled than wrangle a pug through BRD at 3 a.m., PewPewShop pairs you with vetted human players for Classic dungeon and raid progression — Classic Raid Clear starts from EUR 15, and WoW Classic Character Leveling from EUR 2.99 if the grind to the right level is the real blocker.
