In most cases the Battle.net desktop app is stalled by a corrupted cache folder, and clearing it fixes the launcher. Fully quit Battle.net from Task Manager, delete the Battle.net cache folder in %ProgramData%, then relaunch. If it still hangs, run the app as administrator, check Blizzard's service status page, and scan and repair WoW.
The words "the WoW app" usually mean one of two things: the Battle.net desktop launcher you start the game from, or the mobile Battle.net app on your phone. The fixes below are ordered from fastest to most involved — work down the list and stop when the launcher opens.
Fix the Battle.net launcher, in order
- Kill it properly. Closing the window is not enough — Battle.net keeps background processes alive. Open Task Manager, end every Battle.net and Agent process, then start it again. This alone clears a surprising number of infinite spinners.
- Delete the cache. With Battle.net fully closed, press Win+R, type %ProgramData%, and delete the Battle.net folder there. Nothing important lives in it — the app rebuilds it on next launch. This is the single highest-hit-rate fix for a launcher that opens to a blank white window or never finishes loading.
- Run as administrator. Right-click the Battle.net shortcut, Properties, Compatibility, tick "Run this program as an administrator". Permission problems show up as updates that never finish or buttons that do nothing.
- Check it's not Blizzard's end. Before you tear anything apart, look at Blizzard's official service status and their support account on X. Maintenance and outages look identical to a broken install from your side of the screen.
- Scan and Repair. In Battle.net, click the game, then the gear icon next to Play, then Scan and Repair. Slow but reliable for a game that launches and then crashes, or an update stuck at a fixed percentage.
- Reinstall the launcher, not the game. Uninstalling Battle.net does not delete your WoW install. Reinstalling the app is a low-cost step people avoid because they assume the 100+ GB download comes back. It doesn't.

Why does the Battle.net app get stuck on the loading screen?
Almost always the cache. The launcher stores web assets and session data locally, and if that data is written badly — a hard shutdown, a killed update, an antivirus quarantine mid-write — the app waits forever on files it can't read. Deleting the Battle.net folder in %ProgramData% forces a clean rebuild.
If clearing the cache changes nothing, the next suspect is your security software. Add Battle.net and Wow.exe as exceptions in your antivirus and firewall, then retry.
Is the problem my PC or Blizzard's servers?
Check Blizzard's official service status page first — it takes ten seconds and saves an hour. If a realm or the login service is down, no amount of reinstalling helps.
A useful tell: if friends in your guild Discord are reporting the same thing at the same moment, it's not your machine.
The game opens but crashes right away — what now?
Start with addons. Rename your Interface and WTF folders (don't delete them), then launch. If WoW runs clean, an addon was the culprit and you can add them back a few at a time. After that, update your graphics drivers — a stale driver after a patch is a classic instant-crash cause.
What about the mobile Battle.net app?
Force close it, clear the app's cache in your phone settings, confirm it's on the latest version from the store, and try mobile data instead of Wi-Fi. If your authenticator is the part that's broken, use Blizzard's account recovery flow rather than waiting it out — you can't log in without it.
