WoW: Forever reworks the look of specific original zones instead of repainting the whole world: Duskwood turns darker with real-time torch light, Wetlands and Dustwallow Marsh get rebuilt fog, the Badlands get lighting tied to the sun's position, Ashenvale gets flowing water, and Wetlands receives new art overall. HD and SD graphics for characters and the world can be switched either way, so the old look is still there if you want it.

Zone-by-zone: what actually changes

ZoneVisual change (per Blizzard interviews, Wowhead recaps)
DuskwoodSpookier overall; torches cast real-time light
WetlandsNew zone art plus reworked fog
Dustwallow MarshReworked fog
BadlandsLighting that follows the sun's position
AshenvaleFlowing water
Whole worldHD or SD graphics, toggleable for characters and terrain
  • These are targeted passes on original zones, not a Cataclysm-style rebuild. Quest layouts and level ranges are not described as changing because of the art.
  • Zones that were not named — Elwynn, Barrens, Tanaris and the rest — have no confirmed visual rework. Treat anything else as unknown until Blizzard says otherwise.
  • The three new launch zones (Zephras Isle, the Riverglades, Mount Hyjal) are built fresh, so they are not part of this "old zone, new look" list.
  • Source: this came out of Blizzard's BlizzCon deep dive on September 13 and the press interviews afterward, as written up by Wowhead. Blizzard has not published a per-zone graphics changelog.

Can I turn the new graphics off in WoW: Forever?

Yes, at least at the model level. Blizzard confirmed HD and SD graphics for both characters and the world, and you pick per client. The HD and SD models share skeletons, which is why animations line up whichever you choose. Whether the fog, lighting and water passes can be disabled separately from the SD toggle has not been stated, so don't count on a granular slider yet.

Don't confuse this with "Classic Mode", which is the transmog opt-out at first launch — that controls gear appearances, not terrain or lighting.

Will I see the new fog and water in the beta?

Partly. The beta runs September 17 to October 21 with a level cap that starts at 20 and rises to 30 later; week one opens all zones up to level 20, with more zones added after. Duskwood, Ashenvale and Wetlands sit in the high-teens-to-30 band, so the torchlight, flowing water and Wetlands fog should be reachable as the cap climbs. Badlands and Dustwallow Marsh are mid-30s-and-up zones, so their sun lighting and fog are best judged at launch on November 4 rather than in beta.

What GPU does the new lighting need?

The hard requirement Blizzard published is RGBA16F UAV support in compute shaders. In practice that means AMD GCN 1 (2012), NVIDIA Maxwell (2014) or Intel Skylake (2015) and newer. Cards like a Radeon HD 7850, GTX 750 Ti, GTX 9xx or Intel HD 530 will run it (still under minimum spec); a Radeon HD 6950, GTX 760–780, GTX 8xxM or Intel HD 6000 will not. Full system requirements beyond that shader rule are not published yet.

Which zones are brand new rather than reworked?

Three at launch: Zephras Isle, the floating Skyborne start (levels 1–12) with Skywall-inspired architecture; the Riverglades, a new Eastern Kingdoms leveling zone for roughly 30–45 with 150+ quests and a neutral goblin port; and Mount Hyjal, the endgame zone covering the aftermath of Archimonde's defeat and Darkwhisper Gorge, home to the Hyjal Summit raid and one Barrow Deeps entrance. There is also expanded Shen'dralar content between Mulgore and Desolace, and Azshara picks up more quests — a content change, not a graphics one.

If you'd rather spend launch week looking at the new Duskwood than grinding to reach it, PewPewShop's vetted human players offer coaching, play-together sessions and progression help — Forever Leveling 1–30 from EUR 13, or the Skyborne Pack (Zephras Isle + leveling to 60) from EUR 139, taken as pre-orders until November 4.
