In WoW Midnight you upgrade gear at the gear upgrade vendor in Silvermoon City, the expansion's main hub, paying Crests of the tier that matches the item's track (Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero or Myth). Crests drop from dungeons, raids, delves and outdoor content of matching difficulty, and each item can only climb within its own track, never into the next one.
How to upgrade gear in Midnight, step by step
- Fly to Silvermoon City and open the map. The upgrade vendor uses the same anvil-with-arrow icon you knew from Dornogal in The War Within. If you cannot see it, hover the map legend or ask a guard for "item upgrades".
- Talk to the vendor and place the item in the upgrade window. It shows the item's track, its current rank, the next rank, and the exact Crest cost.
- Confirm the upgrade. Repeat until you hit the top rank of that track or run out of Crests.
- An item that has reached the end of its track is finished. To go higher you need a fresh drop from harder content that lands on the next track.

Crests are the only currency you feed into upgrades. Each tier drops from the content that matches it: the lowest from outdoor activities and easy dungeons, the middle tiers from Mythic 0, Normal raid and moderate keys, the top tier from Mythic raid bosses and high Mythic+ completions. Delves pay out Crests too, scaled to the tier you run.
There is a running weekly cap per tier that grows every reset, so a player who starts late can still catch up rather than being locked out. Crests sit at the Warband level, so an alt that clears content contributes to the same pool.
Why does my item stop upgrading in Midnight?
Because it has hit the ceiling of its track. A Champion piece can be pushed to the top of Champion and no further; the game will not let you spend Hero Crests on it. That is by design: the track is decided the moment the item drops, based on where it came from.
The fix is always a new drop. Run the next difficulty up, take a Great Vault slot that offers the higher track, or use the season's tier set catalyst on a piece that already sits on a high track.
Is it worth spending Crests on low-track gear?
Early in a season, yes on anything you will keep for a week or more, because Crests of the lower tiers pile up faster than you can spend them. Later, be picky with the top two tiers: those are the ones you may genuinely run short of. Once your Warband has already pushed a slot past a given level, repeat upgrades there get cheaper, so a second character gears far faster than the first.
Do I need to leave Silvermoon to upgrade older gear?
No. Current-expansion pieces are handled at the Silvermoon vendor. Items from previous expansions were tied to their own hubs and currencies, and they are not worth touching once you have any Midnight drop in that slot.
