Orc is the best shaman race in WoW Classic for PvP and Enhancement, Troll is best for Restoration and Elemental, and Tauren is the survivability pick. Shaman is a Horde-only class on Classic Era and Anniversary realms, so those three are your whole menu. Orc's stun resistance and Blood Fury make it the strongest overall choice; Troll's Berserking haste edges ahead for healers and casters.

- Faction: Horde only. No Alliance shaman exists in Classic Era, Hardcore, Season of Discovery or 20th Anniversary realms.

Why is Orc the top overall shaman race?
Hardiness is the reason. Classic PvP revolves around stunlocks, and a 25% resist chance on every stun is a passive edge nothing else matches. Blood Fury adds a chunk of attack power on demand, which fits Enhancement's Windfury burst perfectly, and Axe Specialization pushes weapon skill up so your big swings glance less. Orc shaman was the default pick for serious rank grinders for good reason.
The trade-off is minor: Orcs bring nothing specifically for healing, so a raid-only Restoration shaman gains more from Troll.
Is Troll better than Orc for Resto or Elemental shaman?
For raiding, yes. Berserking's haste applies to cast time, so a Troll healer squeezes in extra Chain Heals during heavy damage phases and a Troll Elemental fires Lightning Bolts faster. Regeneration also helps during long leveling sessions. If you mainly heal dungeons and raids and rarely PvP, Troll is the better choice.
Elemental is niche in Classic regardless of race, so treat this as a small bonus rather than a dealbreaker.
Is Tauren a bad choice for shaman?
No. Tauren is a solid choice, just not the best. War Stomp is a genuinely strong tool: it stuns everything around you, buys a free Healing Wave cast in PvP, and creates space when a fight goes wrong. Endurance adds 5% max health, which matters more in Classic than it sounds. The downside is that Orc and Troll offer offensive or throughput racials, and Tauren offers none.
Tauren also has the larger hitbox and slower-feeling animations, which some PvP players dislike. If you plan to farm herbs for Flasks, Cultivation is a small but real perk.
Can Alliance play shaman in any Classic version?
Only from The Burning Crusade Classic onward, where Draenei shaman became available, and in Pandaria Classic, where Dwarf, Draenei and Pandaren shaman exist on the Alliance side. On Classic Era, Hardcore, Season of Discovery and the 20th Anniversary realms, shaman remains a Horde class with the same Orc, Troll and Tauren choice.
