Against a level 63 raid boss you need 9% +Hit as melee and 16% +Hit as a caster to remove the base miss chance. Talents cut that for many specs, so an Affliction Warlock or Elemental Shaman with 3/3 hit talents only needs about 6% from gear. Dual-wield white swings are the exception: they carry a huge extra miss penalty no amount of hit rating removes.
The caps at a glance
| Situation | Base miss vs boss (lvl 63) | +Hit needed |
| Melee special attacks (Sinister Strike, Mortal Strike, Heroic Strike) | 9% | 9% |
| Melee white swings, two-handed / one-hand only | 9% | 9% |
| Melee white swings, dual-wielding | ~28% | 9% still recommended (cap is unreachable) |
| Spells vs boss | 17% (only 16% is removable) | 16%, minus talents |
| Spells vs level 60-62 targets | 4-6% | 4-6% |
How to actually stack it
- Talents first — they are free hit. Elemental Precision (Shaman), Suppression (Warlock, affliction spells), Arcane Focus (Mage, arcane only), Shadow Focus (Priest, shadow only), Precision (Rogue/Warrior in later builds). Check whether the talent covers your whole spellbook or one school before you count it.
- Prioritise +Hit on gear over raw damage stats until you hit the cap. A miss is 100% of your damage lost; 20 attack power is a couple of percent.
- Enchants: +1% hit chance to gloves is the classic pick for physical DPS. Weapon and chest enchants generally give stats, not hit.
- Consumables and world buffs don't grant hit directly, so treat gear and talents as the only levers.
- Group support: Improved Faerie Fire from a Balance Druid gives the raid +3% hit against the target — that is three gear slots you free up. Confirm someone is running it before you gem your set around it.
- Recount your cap on trash. Level 60-62 mobs need far less hit, so a boss-capped set is overkill in five-mans.
Why do I still miss so much when dual-wielding?
Dual-wield applies a flat penalty to your white (auto) swings on top of the level-based miss chance, which is why Rogues and Fury Warriors see roughly a quarter of their auto attacks whiff even in full raid gear. You cannot itemise past it.
That's why the community stops at 9%: it caps your yellow attacks (the ones that actually carry your damage), and further hit only chips away slowly at white swings. Past 9%, crit and attack power win.
Do tanks and healers need hit?
Tanks want enough hit to keep threat abilities landing — a missed Sunder Armor or Heroic Strike is a missed threat spike, and that's how pulls go wrong. Most tanks aim toward the 9% special-attack cap but never at the cost of defensive stats.
Healers need none. Healing spells cannot miss in Classic, so +Hit on a healing set is a dead stat.
Is spell hit better than spell power?
Below the cap, yes — comfortably. Every point of hit is a straight percentage increase to everything you cast, while spell power scales through coefficients and is diluted on fast, low-coefficient spells.
Once you are at 16% (or ~6% with your talents counted), extra hit does nothing at all against bosses. Swap it out for spell power or crit immediately.
How do I check my current hit chance?
Open your character sheet and hover the melee or spell panel — the tooltip lists your bonus hit chance from gear. Many players run a stat addon to see the number against a level 63 target directly, since the default UI shows the raw bonus, not the gap to your cap.
