Yes - a WoW subscription without the current expansion still gives you every earlier expansion, all their zones, raids, dungeons and transmog, plus Classic servers on the same sub. What you lose is the newest continent, the higher level cap and the current season's raid and Mythic+ tier - the endgame most active players are grinding right now.

So the honest version: WoW is absolutely worth playing without Midnight if you are here for the world, the story backlog, collecting, alts or Classic. It is not worth it if your reason for logging in is current-season progression with other people.

What your sub covers vs. what Midnight adds

Subscription aloneRequires Midnight
All previous expansions and their campaignsThe new zones and their campaign
Every legacy raid and dungeon, solo or in a groupThe higher level cap
Transmog, mount and pet farming across 20 years of contentThe current season raid tier and Mythic+ pool
Professions, achievements, reputations, old-world explorationCurrent-season gear, ratings and seasonal rewards
WoW Classic and its versions on the same subNew systems introduced with the expansion
  • You do not need the newest expansion to install or subscribe. Blizzard folds older expansions into the base game, so the sub is the only recurring cost.
  • The free Starter Edition lets you test the client to around level 20 with no purchase at all.
  • Legacy raids solo very comfortably at a modern character level - Legion, BfA and older tiers are essentially single-player content now.
  • You will not queue into the current season's rated PvP or the live Mythic+ ladder, because both live at the new cap.

Can I still raid and run Mythic+ without Midnight?

You can run everything from previous expansions, including old Mythic+ seasons for transmog and mounts. What you cannot touch is the live tier - the seasonal dungeon pool and current raid sit above the old level ceiling, and pugs are only forming for that content.

If group play with active players is your whole reason to log in, skipping the expansion means playing an empty half of the game.

Will Midnight become free with the sub later?

Historically, yes: each expansion has eventually been rolled into the base game when the next one launches. That has been the pattern for years, though Blizzard has never promised a date in advance. If you are patient and mostly a solo collector, waiting genuinely costs you very little.

Is one month of sub enough to decide?

It is. Leveling a fresh character through an older expansion at Chromie Time speed, plus a few legacy raid clears, fills a month easily and shows you whether the core game clicks before you spend anything else.

Can I pay for it with gold instead of cash?

The WoW Token turns in-game gold into game time, so an established character can cover the sub without a card. In regions where the Token converts to Battle.net Balance, that balance can go toward a boxed expansion too - so a gold-rich account can bridge the gap.

If you do pick up the expansion and want the season part handled by someone who already knows the pulls, PewPewShop's vetted human players do coaching and play-together progression help - for example Midnight Campaign Completion from EUR 23.99 or the Sporefall Raid Boost from EUR 17.54. No bots, no cheats, and it is entirely optional: the game above is playable without any of it.
