The standard TBC Protection Paladin build puts 46 points in Protection, 10 in Holy and 5 in Retribution. It takes Holy Shield with Improved Holy Shield, Ardent Defender, Combat Expertise and Avenger's Shield. The Holy points go to Divine Intellect and Improved Seal of Righteousness, and the Retribution points go to Benediction. That gives you threat, survivability and mana for raids and Heroics.
Recommended 10/46/5 build, point by point
This is our recommendation, built from the TBC Anniversary talent tooltips. You get 61 points at level 70, your first point arrives at level 10, and each new tier needs 5 more points spent in that tree.
| Tree | Talents (ranks) |
| Protection (46) | Redoubt 5, Precision 3, Toughness 5, Improved Righteous Fury 3, Anticipation 5, Blessing of Kings 1, Spell Warding 2, Blessing of Sanctuary 1, Sacred Duty 2, One-Handed Weapon Specialization 5, Holy Shield 1, Improved Holy Shield 2, Ardent Defender 5, Combat Expertise 5, Avenger's Shield 1 |
| Holy (10) | Divine Intellect 5, Improved Seal of Righteousness 5 |
| Retribution (5) | Benediction 5 |
- Threat: Improved Righteous Fury adds 50% threat to Righteous Fury, and Holy Shield damage causes 35% extra threat.
- Mitigation: Improved Righteous Fury cuts all damage taken by 6%, Spell Warding cuts spell damage by 4%, and Ardent Defender cuts damage by 30% while you are below 35% health.
- Block uptime: Improved Holy Shield raises Holy Shield from 4 to 8 charges and adds 20% to its damage.
- Hit and expertise: Precision gives 3% hit, and Combat Expertise gives 5 expertise plus 10% Stamina, so your threat attacks land more often.
- Mana: Divine Intellect gives 10% Intellect and Benediction makes Seals and Judgements 15% cheaper. Prot Paladins run dry without them.
Why skip the tier 4 Protection talents?
Stoicism, Improved Hammer of Justice and Improved Concentration Aura are situational. You can reach tier 5 using tiers 1 to 3 alone, so those points do more in Holy and Retribution. If your group needs more stuns in Heroics, move points from Improved Seal of Righteousness into Improved Hammer of Justice. That cuts the Hammer of Justice cooldown by 15 seconds.
Is the same build good for Heroic dungeons?
Yes. Avenger's Shield pulls three targets at once, and the extra Holy Shield charges keep blocks and threat going while you hold several mobs, so the build handles Heroic packs well. Some tanks drop Toughness for Reckoning while gearing, but Toughness is the safer pick for progression raids.
Which stats matter most after talents?
Your first goal is 490 defense skill, which makes you uncrittable against raid bosses. Anticipation's 20 defense counts toward it. After that, stack Stamina, avoidance and block value. Holy Shield's blocks also help you avoid crushing blows on bosses that hit hard. Add spell damage only once your survival stats are solid, because it raises threat and does nothing for mitigation.
What about Blessed Life or Deflection hybrids?
You can't reach Blessed Life from this build because it's a tier 7 Holy talent. Deflection (5% parry) is in tier 2 of Retribution. To get it, spend 10 points there (Benediction plus Deflection) instead of the 10 in Holy. That's a valid option if you want more avoidance and less mana.
