The Skyborne are elves who live in the Skywall and rely on elemental magic because they have no Sunwell — that is how Blizzard explained the new World of Warcraft: Forever race at the September 17 live Q&A, per Wowhead's written recap. Quel'Thalas and high elves are pushed to "the future" because that story was too big for a low-level launch zone. Their start is Zephras Isle, a floating island for levels 1–12.

Skyborne lore: what Blizzard has actually confirmed

  • Home: the Skywall — the elemental plane of air. Their starting zone, Zephras Isle, is a floating 1–12 island with Skywall-inspired architecture.
  • Magic: elemental, not arcane. Blizzard's stated reason is simple: no Sunwell, so no fount of arcane power to lean on.
  • Factions: Skyborne are not neutral. The Windshaper branch joins the Horde; the High Order branch joins the Alliance.
  • Classes: every Skyborne can be Warrior, Hunter, Rogue or Druid (with unique sky-blue druid forms); Horde Skyborne add Shaman, Alliance Skyborne add Mage.
  • Racials (per Wowhead): Walk on Air (glide downward for 10 s), Wind Blessed (+1% haste), Elemental Insight (+5% damage to Elementals). High Order also get Read Ley Line (+100% health and mana regeneration); Windshaper also get Skysight (+10% run speed).
  • Access: the race requires the Skyborne Heroic Pack (€29.99 on the EU Battle.net shop) or a higher edition. Forever itself launches November 4, 2026 and is included with a normal subscription.

Anything beyond this — how the Skyborne reached the Skywall, when they split from other elves, who leads them — Blizzard has not published. Treat any detailed backstory you read elsewhere as speculation until an official source says otherwise.

Why do the Skyborne use elemental magic instead of arcane?

Because there is no Sunwell in their story. In classic lore, the high elves of Quel'Thalas built their society around the Sunwell as a wellspring of arcane power. The Skyborne have no such source, so per the Q&A recap they developed elemental magic in the Skywall instead. That is also why both variants get Elemental Insight, and why Horde Skyborne can roll Shaman.

The racial kit reflects the same idea: gliding, wind-themed haste, and ley-line regeneration for the Alliance branch. It reads as an air-and-elements people rather than a mana-and-runes people.

Is the Sunwell in WoW: Forever?

Not at launch, as far as Blizzard has said. Forever is set in WoW's first year, after the Forsaken Kingdom campaign and before Molten Core, and the three new launch zones are Zephras Isle, the Riverglades and Mount Hyjal. Quel'Thalas was explicitly named as future content, and the Sunwell would come with it. No date was given beyond the Spring 2027 and Summer 2027 roadmap entries, which list new raids, dungeons and playable areas without naming Quel'Thalas.

Why no High Elves as a playable race?

Blizzard's answer at the Q&A was scope: Quel'Thalas is a large, high-stakes story that would not fit a low-level starting zone. Rather than ship a thin version of it, they built a new elven race with its own island and left the high elves for a later patch. No High Elves, Ogres or Death Knights were announced for launch; the class roster is the original nine.

Are Skyborne worth rolling at launch?

If you want the fresh 1–12 experience and the sky-blue druid forms, yes — the Zephras Isle start is the only new low-level zone at launch (the Riverglades is 30–45). The trade-off is the Heroic Pack cost, and the fact that the race's deeper lore is still thin; you are playing the opening chapter of a story Blizzard has not finished telling.

If you would rather skip the grind and get straight to the endgame on a Skyborne, PewPewShop's vetted human players offer a Skyborne Pack (Zephras Isle plus leveling to 60) from EUR 139, or plain Forever Leveling 1–30 from EUR 13 — pre-orders open until November 4, played with you or for you, no bots.
