To unlearn a profession in TBC Classic, open your character sheet (default C), select the Skills tab, hover the profession's bar and click the small red button at the right end of the row, then confirm the popup. No trainer or NPC is involved, it costs nothing, and it is instant — but every recipe and skill point is permanently gone.
The steps, in order
- Open the character pane (default hotkey C) and click the Skills tab.
- Expand the Professions category if it is collapsed — the profession you want gone will be listed there with its skill bar.
- Move your cursor over that row. A small red icon appears at the far right end of the bar.
- Click it. A confirmation box asks whether you really want to unlearn the profession.
- Accept. The profession disappears from the list immediately and the slot is free.
- Walk to any trainer of the new profession and learn it. You start at skill 1.
If the red icon never shows up, it is almost always an interface addon covering the row. Type /reload, or log in with addons disabled once, and it will be there. The same flow works in Classic Era and Wrath Classic — Blizzard never moved it.
TBC Raid ClearKarazhan to Sunwell clears with loot reserved for you.from 18 EURGet it doneDo you get anything back when you unlearn?
Nothing. There is no gold refund, no returned reagents, and no partial skill credit. Every recipe, pattern, plan, schematic and design you bought or farmed is wiped, including drop-only and quest-only ones, and you would have to acquire them all again from scratch.
This is the reason to slow down before clicking. Rare recipes like world-drop patterns or reputation-gated plans can cost far more time to replace than the profession skill itself.
Can you unlearn Cooking, First Aid or Fishing?
No. Secondary skills have no unlearn button in the TBC Classic client, and there is no reason to remove them anyway — they do not compete with your two primary profession slots. The same goes for riding, weapon skills and languages.
What happens to gear tied to the profession?
Bind-on-pickup crafted gear stays in your bags and stays equipped. The catch is profession-gated items: engineering trinkets, goggles, bombs and gadgets that require an Engineering skill level become unusable the moment the skill is gone, and tailoring's specialty cloth gear you have not yet made simply cannot be made.
Mining is worth calling out too — dropping it also removes Smelting, so any bars you were producing for a raid group stop with it.
How do you drop a specialization instead of the whole profession?
Specializations are a separate matter. Blacksmithing, Leatherworking and Engineering branch choices are handled by their specialty trainers, and TBC's tailoring specializations can be dropped by speaking with the relevant trainer for a gold fee, leaving the base profession and its skill level untouched. Check the trainer first — if a specialization swap is all you need, you never have to unlearn the profession itself.
Quick sanity check before you click
- Are you dropping it for raid buffs, gold, or convenience? Gathering pays now; crafting pays at max skill.
- Do you own recipes that are no longer obtainable or are reputation-locked?
- Will the replacement profession actually reach a useful skill level before your next raid tier?
- Could a bank alt hold the new profession instead, keeping both?
