For raiding in TBC, the standard rogue talent build is Combat 20/41/0. You take Malice, Murder, Ruthlessness and Relentless Strikes in Assassination, then go 41 points deep in Combat for Blade Flurry, Adrenaline Rush and Surprise Attacks. Combat is also the easiest leveling spec. For arena, most rogues play Subtlety builds with Shadowstep and Preparation, or Mutilate.

| Leveling 10-70 | Combat, adding Assassination later | Improved Sinister Strike, Dual Wield Specialization, Lightning Reflexes, Blade Flurry |

| Arena (Mutilate) | Deep Assassination with Subtlety points | Cold Blood, Seal Fate, Mutilate, Preparation |
- Total points at 70: 61. You get your first point at level 10 and one more every level after that.
- Capstone talents (41st point): Mutilate for Assassination, Surprise Attacks for Combat and Shadowstep for Subtlety.
- Weapon choice for Combat: spend your weapon-specialization points on the weapon type you actually use. For most raiders that means Sword Specialization, or Fist Weapon Specialization if your best weapons are fists.
Why is Combat the best raid spec for rogues in TBC?
Combat gives you the most steady damage. Combat Potency keeps your energy coming in from off-hand hits. Weapon Expertise and Precision cut down on dodged and missed attacks. Adrenaline Rush and Blade Flurry give you two strong cooldowns, and Blade Flurry also handles cleave fights. The 20 points in Assassination are there for crit and combo-point efficiency, so you can keep Slice and Dice up and still finish with Rupture or Eviscerate.
Phase 3 (Black Temple and Mount Hyjal, live since August 27, 2026 per Blizzard's announcement) makes swords even more attractive. The Warglaives of Azzinoth from Illidan are a matched pair of swords, and Combat Swords rogues get the most out of them.
Should one rogue in the raid play Hemorrhage?
Some guilds ask one rogue to play a Combat build that dips into Subtlety for Hemorrhage, because the Hemorrhage debuff adds physical damage that every melee player benefits from. That rogue does less damage personally, so only do it if your raid leader actually wants the debuff. Otherwise stay in the standard 20/41/0.
What talents do rogues use in TBC arena?
Subtlety builds that take Shadowstep and Preparation are the classic arena choice. Preparation resets Vanish, Sprint, Evasion and, if you have it, Shadowstep, so you get a second round of every escape and burst cooldown. Cheat Death and Premeditation help both your survival and your openers. Mutilate builds trade some of that utility for heavy burst against cloth and leather targets, and they often take Preparation too. Combat Swords is still good in battlegrounds, where steady damage matters more than control.
Which spec should I level with?
Level as Combat. Improved Sinister Strike, Lightning Reflexes and Dual Wield Specialization let you kill mobs without long rests, and Blade Flurry handles pulls with two enemies. At 70, raiders are already close to the final raid build. PvP players should reset their talents once their gear is ready for arena.
