"WoW Burning Crusade Anniversary" almost always means Blizzard's 20th Anniversary Classic realms progressing into The Burning Crusade — the fresh-start Classic servers opened for WoW's 20th birthday in November 2024, which run the original 1-60 game in timed phases and then open the Dark Portal. It can also mean TBC's own anniversary: the expansion launched 16 January 2007.
Three separate things get called "the anniversary" and they are easy to mix up:
- Anniversary Classic realms — fresh Classic servers launched in November 2024 for WoW's 20th anniversary, with PvE, PvP and Hardcore flavours in both NA and EU. Everyone starts at level 1 on day one; raids and content unlock on a published phase schedule rather than all at once.
- The Burning Crusade step — these realms are designed to move forward through the expansions rather than sit on vanilla forever. Reaching TBC means the level cap lifts past 60, Outland opens through the Dark Portal, and blood elves and draenei become playable.
- The Burning Crusade's own anniversary — the original expansion went live on 16 January 2007, so its 20th falls in January 2027.
There is also the retail 20th anniversary event that ran in modern WoW in late 2024 — timewalking, a revisited Blackrock Depths and anniversary rewards. That is a separate thing from the Classic realms, and it is not "Burning Crusade" content.
TBC Raid ClearKarazhan to Sunwell clears with loot reserved for you.from 18 EURGet it doneIs the Burning Crusade Anniversary a new expansion?
No. Nothing new is being built. It is the 2007 expansion re-released on the anniversary realm timeline, the same way The Burning Crusade Classic ran in 2021. Expect the classic Outland arc: Hellfire Peninsula through Netherstorm, Karazhan, Serpentshrine, Tempest Keep, Black Temple and Sunwell as phases land.
What happens to my Anniversary character when TBC opens?
When Blizzard did this rollover in 2021, players chose per character: take them forward into Outland, or leave them on a Classic Era realm frozen at 60. A paid clone let you do both. Blizzard has generally repeated that pattern, but confirm the exact offer on the official announcement for your realm before phase day — the details and deadlines have varied between rollovers.
Do I need to buy anything extra to play it?
One active WoW subscription covers modern WoW, Classic and the anniversary realms — you do not buy a separate Classic licence. Optional extras like character clones, transfers or a Deluxe edition have historically cost money on top.
Is it worth starting fresh?
If you want a real levelling economy, cheap mats, contested world bosses and a raid roster forming from scratch, a fresh anniversary realm is the best version of Classic there is. If you only care about endgame, the population thins after the first phases and the honest answer is to wait for the phase you actually want to play.
The one thing that punishes people on fresh realms is rank grinding — Classic PvP ranking is a brutal, weeks-long time sink that rewards hours played more than skill. If you would rather not lose your evenings to it, PewPewShop's Classic 20th Anniversary PvP Ranking help starts from EUR 499.99, run by vetted human players (no bots, no cheats), and we also coach players through TBC dungeon and raid prep if you just want to get better at it yourself.
