ZF in WoW Classic stands for Zul'Farrak, the sandtroll dungeon in northwestern Tanaris. It is a 5-player instance tuned for characters around level 44-54, and it has been a staple of the mid-game since 2004: the Pyramid Event stair fight, the Sul'thraze the Lasher sword combo, the Carrot on a Stick trinket, and some of the best chain-pulling gold farms in the game all live here.

Where is ZF and how do you get there?
The entrance sits in the far north-west corner of Tanaris. From Gadgetzan, head west along the road, then turn north when the troll ruins come into view. Both factions reach it the same way: Alliance flies into Gadgetzan from Thalanaar or Theramore, Horde from Freewind Post or Camp Taurajo. No attunement or key is needed to enter, but the mallet for Gahz'rilla is a separate story (see below).
Once inside, the dungeon is an open outdoor city rather than a set of corridors, so pulls are easier to break and easier to overpull. That openness is exactly why ZF became the classic mage AoE farm.
What is the Pyramid Event in Zul'Farrak?
The Pyramid Event is the dungeon's most memorable fight. You free the prisoners chained on top of the ziggurat (Sergeant Bly's group plus the goblin Weegli Blastfuse), then hold the stairs while waves of trolls run up at you. When the waves stop, Nekrum Gutchewer and Shadowpriest Sezz'ziz arrive. After that, Bly's crew turns on you if you refuse their terms — killing them is optional but drops a chest. Wipes here are common for undergeared groups, so tanks usually hold the top step with healers behind them.
How do you summon Gahz'rilla?
Gahz'rilla is the optional hydra boss in the pool at the back of the instance. Someone in the group needs the Mallet of Zul'Farrak, which is made by taking the Sacred Mallet (from Qiaga the Keeper in the Altar of Zul, Hinterlands) to the altar on Jintha'Alor and combining it there. The mallet holder rings the gong at the pool and the fight begins. Gahz'rilla is the source of Gahz'rilla's Electrified Scale, part of the mechanostrider/mechanical mount quest chain, and it drops the Carrot on a Stick trinket that speeds up mounts by 3%.
Why do mages farm ZF?
The graveyard section and the troll packs near the entrance are large groups of low-health mobs that stack neatly. A mage with Frost Nova, Blizzard and Cone of Cold can gather twenty or more and burn them down, then repeat. Cloth drops, greens and vendor trash add up, and the instance cap of five resets per hour is the only real limiter. Hunters and warlocks also run ZF for the Quest chain items and for weapon drops like Ripsaw and Jang'thraze.
Which quests should you bring into ZF?
- Troll Temper and Tabetha's Task from Tanaris/Dustwallow
- Divino-matic Rod (Gadgetzan) — turns into the Chief Engineer Bilgewhizzle reward
- Nekrum's Medallion and The Prophecy of Mosh'aru — tied to the Pyramid Event and Zum'rah
- Gahz'rilla — the hydra quest from the Hinterlands chain
- Scarab Shells and The Spider God (Horde) — smaller side quests
Bring them all; ZF is one of the best XP-per-hour dungeons in the mid-40s largely because of quest completion, not just mob kills.
