Karazhan opens with the expansion itself — it is a launch-tier raid in TBC, not a later phase. In the original 2007 Burning Crusade and again in TBC Classic (live June 1, 2021) Karazhan, Gruul's Lair and Magtheridon's Lair were all available from day one. Nothing on Blizzard's side holds the doors shut; what stops you is your character. You need level 70 and the Master's Key to get inside.

Karazhan quick facts

  • Availability: Phase 1 / launch tier. On any TBC Classic-style realm, Karazhan is raidable the same day the expansion content goes live.
  • Location: Deadwind Pass, the tower between Duskwood and Swamp of Sorrows. The raid entrance is the main gate at the base of the tower.
  • Size: 10 players.
  • Level requirement: 70 to enter.
  • Attunement: The Master's Key, earned through the quest chain that starts with Archmage Alturus outside the tower and finishes in the Black Morass (Caverns of Time).
  • Lockout: One clear per weekly reset. Every raider is saved to the instance ID, so plan your group before you pull Attumen.
  • Loot: Tier 4 gloves (The Curator) and helm (Prince Malchezaar), plus the tower's own epics, Nightbane's drops and the Chess event chest.

How to get your Karazhan attunement

  1. Reach level 70 (the chain can be started earlier, but the final dungeon is a level-70 instance).
  2. Talk to Archmage Alturus at the base of Karazhan in Deadwind Pass and complete his opening quests in the surrounding grounds.
  3. Report to Khadgar in Shattrath. He sends you after three key fragments: one in Shadow Labyrinth, one in the Steamvault, one in the Arcatraz. All three are 5-player dungeons.
  4. Return the fragments, then unlock the Caverns of Time if you have not already, so you can enter the Black Morass.
  5. Clear the Black Morass timed event (18 portals, three bosses) and hand in to receive The Master's Key.

Budget an evening or two with a solid five-player group. The Arcatraz key alone is the longest leg — it requires its own key or a rogue/warlock to open the door on the way in.

Do you need attunement for every raid night?

Every character entering needs their own Master's Key; it is not a group-wide flag. Once you have it, it never expires. If you re-roll or bring a fresh alt, that alt runs the chain again.

What time does Karazhan reset?

Karazhan follows the normal weekly raid reset for your region — Tuesday morning on North American realms, Wednesday morning on European ones. If your group cleared half the tower on Sunday, you can come back for the rest any day before that reset.

How long does a Karazhan clear take?

A geared, organised 10-man finishes a full clear in roughly two to three hours. A first-week group in dungeon blues should plan for two nights, with the Curator, Shade of Aran and Prince Malchezaar as the usual walls. Nightbane is optional and needs a separate summoning quest chain.

Can you raid Karazhan on the Anniversary realms?

Yes. When TBC content arrives on the 20th Anniversary progression realms it follows the same structure: Karazhan belongs to the first raid tier and is open as soon as the expansion goes live on those realms. The level and attunement requirements are unchanged.

If you would rather skip the key-fragment grind or want experienced raiders alongside you for your first full clear, PewPewShop's vetted human players can help — Karazhan attunement help starts from EUR 44 and a full Karazhan raid clear with a pro group from EUR 428.99, all Self-Play or Piloted, no bots, zero-ban record.
