Return to Karazhan is a Legion dungeon located in Deadwind Pass, the narrow mountain zone wedged between Duskwood and Swamp of Sorrows in the southern Eastern Kingdoms. The dungeon entrance is the main front gate of Karazhan tower itself. The original Burning Crusade raid still lives in the same tower, but its entrance is a separate portal further down the slope, so pick the right door.

Quick facts

  • Zone: Deadwind Pass, Eastern Kingdoms (southeast of Darkshire in Duskwood).
  • Entrance: the large front gate of Karazhan tower, at the top of the winding road up to the keep.
  • Expansion: Legion (added in patch 7.1). Split later into two Mythic+ dungeons, Lower Karazhan and Upper Karazhan.
  • Bosses: 8 in total - Opera Hall, Maiden of Virtue, Attumen the Huntsman and Moroes in the lower half; The Curator, Shade of Medivh, Mana Devourer and Viz'aduum the Watcher in the upper half.
  • Fastest way in: queue it through Group Finder or Legion Timewalking and you are teleported inside the instance; no flying required.

How to get to Return to Karazhan on foot

  1. Fly to Darkshire in Duskwood (Alliance) or Stonard in Swamp of Sorrows (Horde). Both flight points connect to Deadwind Pass.
  2. From Darkshire, ride east out of Duskwood along the road; from Stonard, ride west. Either road drops you into Deadwind Pass.
  3. Follow the road south until the tower of Karazhan comes into view; it dominates the zone, so you cannot miss it.
  4. Take the winding path up to the keep. The dungeon portal sits in the big front gateway of the tower.
  5. If you end up at a small side portal further down the hill, that is the Burning Crusade raid entrance. Walk back up to the main gate.

Flying is enabled in the Eastern Kingdoms, so most players simply fly straight to the tower and land in front of the gate. If you are in a Chromie Time timeline that does not include Legion, the instance portal still works - dungeon access is not tied to your chosen timeline.

Do I still need the Karazhan attunement quest to enter?

Not anymore. When the dungeon launched in Legion it sat behind a short quest chain from Khadgar, but that requirement was removed and you can walk straight in today. The only remaining gate is level: it is a Legion-era instance, so very low characters will be turned away until they reach the expansion's level bracket.

The attunement that does still exist is the Burning Crusade Classic one - the Master's Key chain for the original 10-player raid. That is a separate game and a separate door.

Is Return to Karazhan Lower or Upper?

Both. The full dungeon is one continuous eight-boss run when you enter from the world or through normal Group Finder. For Mythic+ it was cut in two: Lower Karazhan covers the Opera Hall, Maiden of Virtue, Attumen and Moroes, while Upper Karazhan starts at The Curator and climbs through Shade of Medivh and Mana Devourer to Viz'aduum. Both halves share the same physical entrance; the keystone decides which section you are locked into.

Why is Karazhan in Deadwind Pass and not Legion's Broken Isles?

Karazhan is Medivh's tower, and it has stood in Deadwind Pass since vanilla. Legion revisited it because the Burning Legion's storyline ran through the Guardian's legacy, so instead of building a new zone Blizzard reopened the old tower with new floors and bosses. That is why a Legion dungeon sits in a level-20-era Eastern Kingdoms zone, next to the Burning Crusade raid.

What drops in Return to Karazhan that people still farm?

The two big draws are the Midnight's Eternal Reins mount from Attumen the Huntsman and a set of unique cosmetic weapons and transmog from the upper floors. On Timewalking weeks the loot scales to current item level, which is the main reason mixed-level groups still queue it.
