In WoW: Forever, a quest offered at level 3–4 in your starting zone hands out a gathering manual for Herbalism, Mining or Skinning, so you can pick up your first gathering profession before you ever walk to a trainer in the capital. Blizzard confirmed the quest in post-BlizzCon interviews; the exact quest name, giver and whether one character can claim more than one manual have not been published yet.

What is confirmed about the manual quest

  • Level: offered at level 3–4, early enough that you still have most of the starting zone ahead of you.
  • Choice: Herbalism, Mining or Skinning — the three gathering skills. No crafting manual was mentioned.
  • Source: stated by Blizzard developers in interviews after BlizzCon 2026, as written up by Wowhead. It is not in the official panel recap, so treat fine details as subject to change.
  • Companion quests: the same starting-zone rework adds quests such as "Grund and Gozwin" (Dun Morogh) and "Carry Your Weight" that reward a bind-on-pickup 6-slot bag, and bags now equip themselves when looted — handy once herbs and ore start piling up.
  • Still unknown: the quest's name, which NPC gives it, whether it exists in every starting zone including Zephras Isle, and whether the manual teaches the skill outright or simply points you to a trainer.

How to make sure you don't miss it

  1. Play the starting zone quests in order — don't skip the village hub after your first two or three kills-and-collect tasks.
  2. Around level 3, check every quest giver in the hub before leaving for the next camp.
  3. Pick the manual that matches your class plan: Skinning if you fight beasts constantly (Hunters, Warriors), Mining if you intend to level Blacksmithing or Engineering later, Herbalism for future Alchemy or the Herbalist Incense Candle campfire object.
  4. Grab the bag quest in the same area so you have room for what you gather.

Which gathering profession should I take first in Forever?

Take Skinning if you want zero detours: every beast you kill for XP is also a skill-up. Mining pairs with Blacksmithing and Engineering, and ore is the backbone of both. Herbalism feeds Alchemy and, from profession skill 20, unlocks the Herbalist Incense Candle you can place at a campsite for an Intellect buff.

One racial worth knowing: Tauren Cultivation now grows bonus herbs even without Herbalism, so a Tauren can afford to spend the manual on Mining or Skinning and still pick flowers on the side.

Does the manual replace the profession trainer?

Not confirmed. Blizzard only said the quest "offers a manual" for one of the three gathering skills. Whether that book teaches Apprentice rank on read, or whether you still visit a trainer for later ranks, was not spelled out. Expect the usual trainer visits for Journeyman and beyond until the beta shows otherwise.

Is there a Legacy bonus for gathering in Forever?

Yes. The Legacy system has an "Increasing Tradeskills" challenge category, and you earn a Legacy point the first time any tradeskill reaches 150, 225 and 300. Points go into account-wide perks such as Bountiful Harvest (more materials from Mining, Herbalism and Skinning) and Working Overtime (+4% skill-up chance per rank). Grabbing a gathering skill at level 3 means you start banking toward those milestones from your first zone.

Can I test the level 3 quest in the beta?

The Forever beta runs September 17 – October 21, 2026, with the level cap starting at 20 and later rising to 30. Week one covers the Skyborne start on Zephras Isle plus all zones up to level 20, so every starting zone is open — the manual quest should be reachable within the first half hour of a new character. Access comes with the Skyborne Epic Pack, the Warcraft Forever Collection or an opt-in invite wave.
