What Blizzard has actually said

Only one statement matters here. It comes from Kris Zierhut's IGN interview, which Wowhead reported on October 28, 2026. Rumors and leaks don't count.

  • WoW: Forever launch: November 4, 2026, at 3 p.m. Pacific. It is included with an active subscription or Game Time.
  • Graphics in Forever: you can switch characters and the world between HD and SD.
  • Showcase areas: Badlands has sun-position lighting, Ashenvale has flowing water, Duskwood has torch light, and Dustwallow Marsh and the Wetlands have reworked fog.

If you want to see the new lighting before any Retail patch, the only place to do that is Forever. A good first stop is the Ruins of Lordaeron, a level 15-20 dungeon that Blizzard's launch dungeon video used to show off the lighting.

What graphics changes does WoW: Forever actually have?

Forever updates world lighting, shadows, water and fog on top of the original 2004 map. Before launch, Wowhead's coverage named these examples: sun-position lighting in the Badlands, flowing water in Ashenvale, a darker Duskwood lit by torches, reworked fog in Dustwallow Marsh and the Wetlands, and new art for the Wetlands.

Character models come in HD and SD versions that share the same skeletons, so animations stay the same whichever look you pick. The Skyborne are the one exception for now. Their SD models and SD druid forms are planned for early 2027.

Is there a release date for better water and lighting in Retail?

No. Blizzard has not named a patch, a season or a time window. Zierhut only said the Retail team is talking about it and that he does not know when it could happen.

Treat it as a stated possibility rather than a roadmap item. Official Retail patch notes would be the first place to confirm it.

Can you turn the new graphics off in WoW: Forever?

Yes. Forever lets you choose HD or SD graphics for characters and the world. Players who want the 2004 look can keep it, and players who want the modern lighting can turn it on.

The setting changes only what you see on your screen. It has no effect on gameplay, other players or your character's appearance for anyone else.

Will my PC run Forever's new lighting?

Official system requirements for Forever have not been published. The only hard limit Blizzard named came during the beta: the GPU must support RGBA16F UAV in compute shaders.

In practice, that means AMD GCN 1 (2012), NVIDIA Maxwell (2014), Intel Skylake (2015) or newer. Blizzard listed cards like the GTX 750 Ti and Radeon HD 7850 as working, but still below minimum spec. A GTX 760-780 or a Radeon HD 6950 did not work.

Are other WoW: Forever features coming to Retail?

Some might. In an interview with Fiamma at PAX Australia, Holly Longdale and Clay Stone said Forever features such as the transmog changes could come to Retail. Like the lighting, that is a possibility with no date attached.

Retail also tends to share systems the other way. Forever already uses the modern client's addon API and the Cooldown Manager from Retail, so code and tools clearly move between the two games.

Who is Kris Zierhut?

Will modern WoW get a water and lighting update?

Blizzard has not announced one. The only statement is that the Retail team is talking about bringing better water and lighting to modern WoW. Kris Zierhut said he does not know when, so there is no date, patch or confirmed scope.

Can you play WoW: Forever in original graphics?

Yes. WoW: Forever lets you switch between HD and SD graphics for characters and the world. HD and SD models share skeletons, so animations match. The Skyborne race's SD models are planned for early 2027.

Is WoW: Forever a separate purchase from Retail?
