Which spec should a Shaman level with?

Enhancement is the best solo leveling spec for most Shamans because it spends less mana between pulls. An ordinary creature takes roughly 10-15 seconds to kill solo in Forever, so fights are long enough for mana to decide how often you stop and drink.

Enhancement is built around two-handed weapons only, and its swings do the steady work. Maelstrom Weapon then cuts the cast time and mana cost of Lightning Bolt when you need a ranged hit.

Elemental is the honest compromise. Lightning Bolt, Lava Burst and a Chain Lightning that costs about 35% less feel strong, but you will drink more often. Restoration works best in a group, and our recommendation is to save it for your second spec.

What are the talent priorities by level?

Shaman talent priorities follow each spec's core tools. Plan the exact build in our WoW: Forever Talent Calculator, which reads the game client.

What should a Shaman prioritize at levels 10-20?

At levels 10-20, take talents that directly improve your main attack and skip anything meant for another role. Enhancement wants melee and two-handed damage. Elemental wants Lightning Bolt damage and efficiency. Elemental's first milestones are Elemental Focus at 11 points and Earthbound at 16; Enhancement's are Shamanistic Focus and Stormstrike.

What should a Shaman prioritize at levels 20-40?

At levels 20-40, build toward each spec's signature tools. Enhancement should look for Maelstrom Weapon, Mental Quickness (Intellect into spell damage and healing) and Rage of the Farseer, a 3-minute attack speed cooldown.

Elemental reaches Call of Thunder and Lightning Overload at 21 points, then Lightning Mastery at 31. At one point per level, those land at levels 30 and 40. Restoration should plan around Riptide, and it gains a Mana Tide Totem rank at level 38.

What should a Shaman prioritize at levels 40-60?

At levels 40-60, buy dual spec first, then keep one spec for questing and one for groups. Enhancement plus Restoration is our recommendation. Treat this band as the least settled, since Blizzard expects a large tuning pass once it has data from players past level 30.

What changed for Shaman compared to Classic?

Forever Shamans gained modern tools on top of the Classic kit, with totems changing the most. Most of these details come from a Blizzard video summarized by Wowhead and from Blizzard's October 15 beta development notes.

  • Totems: a totem bar, and Totemic Projection for Restoration and Elemental, which relocates active totems. Three new Restoration spells summon a customizable totem set in one cast. The Elemental summary lists a 5-minute totem duration.
  • Raid-wide buffs: Strength of Earth, Grace of Air, Windfury and Flametongue totems now reach the whole raid.
  • Elemental: Lava Burst adds bonus damage on Flame Shocked targets, Lightning Overload can repeat a lightning spell at no cost, and Fire Nova is now a spell rather than a totem.
  • Restoration: Riptide makes Chain Heal more effective.
  • Stats: hit is one stat and crit is one stat, across melee, ranged and spells.

The class is still contentious. The Classic Shaman Discord closed for about 13 hours on November 3 in protest at the design, and as of that day Wowhead reported no listed tuning changes after the November 2 notes.

Which race is best for a Shaman?

Windshaper Skyborne is our pick for Horde casters and healers, while Dwarf is the Alliance choice. High Order Skyborne cannot be Shaman. Windshaper needs the Skyborne Heroic Pack or higher.

RaceFactionUseful launch racials
Dwarf (new)AllianceArtisan's Precision +1% hit, Stoneform with Physical reduction and Bleed, Poison and Disease removal
Windshaper Skyborne (new)HordeWind-Blessed 2% haste, Skysight movement speed, Elemental Insight
TrollHordeBerserking for 15 seconds, stronger Regeneration
OrcHordeBlood Fury on a 2-minute cooldown
TaurenHordeEndurance +5% Health, War Stomp on a 90-second cooldown

What does a Shaman do in a group?

A Shaman heals as Restoration or deals damage as Elemental or Enhancement, and every spec adds value through totems. Windfury and Flametongue totems remain exclusive with each other, so agree on them before the pull. Tanking is off the table for now: Blizzard calls Shaman tanks a popular team discussion but says it is not officially pursuing them.

Raids open December 9, so no damage rankings exist and any list claiming one is guessing. PvP is better served: Honor gear includes healer, melee and caster sets for Shaman.

What mistakes do new Forever Shamans make?

The most common Shaman mistakes come from carrying Classic or later-expansion habits into Forever.

  • Expecting dual wield. Enhancement is built around two-handed weapons only.
  • Training a new rank and leaving the old one on your bars. Open the spellbook and place it by hand.
  • Recasting totems out of habit when Totemic Projection can move them.
  • Paying for frequent respecs instead of waiting for dual spec at level 40.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Shaman spec for leveling in WoW: Forever?

Enhancement is our recommendation for solo leveling because two-handed melee swings cost no mana, which reduces downtime between pulls. Maelstrom Weapon adds a cheaper, faster Lightning Bolt. Elemental also works if you prefer range, but expect to stop and drink more often. Blizzard plans a large tuning pass, so advice for levels 30-60 may shift.

Can Alliance play Shaman in WoW: Forever?

Yes. Dwarf Shaman is one of the new race and class combinations in WoW: Forever, which gives Alliance players access to the class. High Order Skyborne cannot be Shaman, because that option belongs to Horde Windshaper Skyborne. High Order Skyborne can be Mage instead.

Does Enhancement Shaman dual wield in WoW: Forever?

No. Blizzard describes Forever Enhancement as built around two-handed weapons only, so plan your gear around one big weapon. The spec also uses Maelstrom Weapon, Mental Quickness and Rage of the Farseer, a 3-minute cooldown that increases attack speed. Windfury Totem remains part of its group value.

Can a Shaman tank in WoW: Forever?

Not as an official role. In an interview with JackedIQ, Blizzard said Shaman tanking is a very popular discussion on the team, but it is not something the developers are officially pursuing right now. Plan on healing as Restoration or dealing damage as Elemental or Enhancement in group content.

When does a Shaman get dual spec in WoW: Forever?

Dual specialization is available at level 40. Blizzard developers have discussed whether that is the right level, but no change has been announced. For a Shaman, it allows one spec for questing and another for groups, with Enhancement plus Restoration being a practical pairing for most players.

Are Shaman totems raid-wide in WoW: Forever?

Blizzard's October 15 beta development notes made Strength of Earth, Grace of Air, Windfury and Flametongue totems raid-wide. Windfury and Flametongue stay exclusive with each other, so a group should agree which one each Shaman uses. Raids open on December 9, when these buffs get their first real test.
