| Leveling 1-60 | Affliction | Damage over time plus self-healing through drains |
| Dungeons | Destruction | Bane of Havoc and Incinerate reward fights with several targets and Immolate uptime |
| Raids (open December 9) | Destruction as a starting point | No raid logs exist yet, so this is not a damage ranking |
| PvP | Demonology | Soul Link at 21 points and Demonic Pact at 31 add staying power |
Blizzard raised class damage and higher-level creature health in its launch development notes. It plans a large tuning pass once it has data from players past level 30, so treat the 30-60 advice here as the best current read.

Affliction is the best Warlock leveling spec in WoW: Forever for most players, and that is our recommendation rather than Blizzard's. Blizzard describes it as damage over time and draining, with full critical-strike viability and self-healing through drains.
That fits how solo combat works here. Blizzard puts an ordinary kill at roughly 10-15 seconds for a solo player, so spreading damage and healing back through Drain Life wastes less downtime. Pair it with the Voidwalker to hold mobs while your damage ticks.
Demonology is the compromise for players who want more from their demons. Its catch is that summoning a different pet cancels Demonic Sacrifice until you reach Demonic Pact at the 31-point milestone.
Which talents matter at each level?
The table lists the one-point milestone talents of each tree, from the game client. Plan the rest point by point in our WoW: Forever Talent Calculator.
| Spec | 11 points | 16 points | 21 points | 31 points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Demonology | Demonic Sacrifice | Fel Domination | Soul Link | Demonic Pact |
| Destruction | Shadowburn | Conflagrate | Bane of Havoc | Incinerate |
| Affliction | Not published | Not published | Not published | Not published |
Levels 10-20
From level 10 to 20, stay in Affliction and favor talents that make damage over time stronger or cut your mana and health downtime. Take Amplify Curse at 11 points, and read each tooltip, because old Classic talent knowledge does not carry over cleanly.
Levels 20-40
From level 20 to 40, keep pushing down the Affliction tree and take Curse of Exhaustion at 16 points and Siphon Life at 21 as they unlock. Shadow Mastery was retuned during the beta and stays worth checking for any Shadow-focused build.
Levels 40-60
From level 40 to 60, keep Affliction as your solo spec and build Destruction as your second spec with dual spec. Aim for Bane of Havoc, then Incinerate, which requires Bane of Havoc and deals 25% more damage to an Immolated target.

The biggest Warlock changes are Banes, stackable weapon imbues, Spirit-based Life Tap and pets that scale with your stats. These come from Blizzard's Rogue and Warlock deep dive unless noted otherwise.
- Banes: Curse of Agony and Curse of Doom are now Banes, limited to one Bane per Warlock on a target.
- Curses: Curse of the Elements covers all magic damage, and Curse of Shadows is gone.
- Weapon imbues: Firestone (Fire damage and crit) and Spellstone (Shadow damage and spell haste) stack with temporary enchantments like Wizard Oil.
- Life Tap: it now scales with Spirit.
- Soul Shards: Drain Soul has a rising chance per tick to give one.
- Hellfire: it can now crit, per Blizzard's October 1 beta patch notes.
- Training: total class training for levels 1-60 costs 206-207 gold, with Warlock costs reduced by the expected price of pet Grimoires.
Which race is best for a Warlock?
Undead is our Horde recommendation for a Warlock and Human is our Alliance recommendation, with Orc the better Horde pick for pet-focused Demonology. Skyborne cannot be Warlocks. Troll is one of Forever's new race and class combinations.
| Race | Faction | Warlock value |
|---|---|---|
| Undead | Horde | Touch of the Grave has a 30% activation chance for casters and a 15-second internal cooldown |
| Orc | Horde | Command gives +5% Warlock pet damage; Blood Fury is on a 2-minute cooldown |
| Troll | Horde | Berserking lasts 15 seconds; new Warlock combination |
| Human | Alliance | +10% Spirit feeds Life Tap; Ruthless adds +1% crit chance |
| Gnome | Alliance | Expansive Mind raises maximum resource, but Eureka! does not affect periodic effects, which hurts Affliction |
What does a Warlock bring to a group?
A Warlock is a ranged damage dealer who also brings Curse of the Elements, crowd control and utility. Blizzard says crowd control and Threat still matter in Forever dungeons, so Banish and Fear stay useful on dense pulls.
Healthstones, Soulstones and summoning remain part of the kit. Blizzard even cited Warlock identity when explaining why quick teleports such as Summoning Stones concern the team.
In PvP, the beta Forever Open tournament gave the class a loud early signal, but the sample was narrow.
What mistakes do Forever Warlocks make?
The most common Warlock mistakes come from carrying Classic habits into a reworked class. These five are the ones to fix first.
- Following old builds: Classic point splits do not fit the reworked trees.
- Forgetting new spells: newly learned spells no longer go onto your action bars automatically, so place them by hand after each trainer visit.
- Downranking heavily: on the beta, spells far below your level got less benefit from Spell Damage and a lower chance to trigger talent effects.
- Planning around two Banes: Curse of Agony and Curse of Doom no longer sit together on one target from one Warlock.
- Swapping pets after Demonic Sacrifice: until Demonic Pact, summoning a different pet cancels the buff.

Frequently asked questions
Is Warlock good in WoW: Forever?
Warlock looks strong so far, with demons, drains and useful group utility. Warlocks also took first and second place in the beta Forever Open tournament, per Wowhead, though that was a level 30 community event. No raid data exists yet, and Blizzard plans a large tuning pass after collecting data from players past level 30.
What is the best Warlock race in WoW: Forever?
Undead is our Horde recommendation and Human is our Alliance recommendation. Undead gets Touch of the Grave, while Human gets +10% Spirit, which helps Life Tap. Orc suits pet-focused Demonology through Command. The choice is modest, so pick your preferred faction and the friends you want to play with first.
Can Skyborne be Warlocks in WoW: Forever?
No. Skyborne can be Warriors, Hunters, Rogues and Druids, with Windshaper Horde Skyborne also able to be Shaman and High Order Alliance Skyborne also able to be Mages. Warlock is not on either list. Troll Warlock is the new combination for the class in WoW: Forever.
When do Warlocks get dual spec in WoW: Forever?
Dual spec became available at level 40 in Blizzard's published plans. A Blizzard developer floated a lower level during the beta podcast, but no change was announced. It lets a Warlock keep a solo spec and a group spec, which beats paying repeatedly for respecs at a class trainer in a major city.
What are Banes for Warlocks in WoW: Forever?
Banes are a new Warlock category that includes Curse of Agony and Curse of Doom. Each Warlock can keep only one Bane on a target, so the two no longer run together from the same player. Destruction also gets Bane of Havoc, which copies part of your damage onto the bane's target.
