Renown items in Midnight are the rewards attached to each faction's renown track — gear, transmog, mounts, pets, recipes and cosmetics. You earn renown levels to unlock them, then buy most of them from that faction's quartermaster with gold and expansion currency. Renown is account-wide, so every level you push on your main carries over to your alts.
How Midnight renown rewards actually work
- Two kinds of reward per level. Some drop into your bags or mailbox the second you hit the level. Others just flip a vendor item from locked to purchasable — you still pay for it.
- The renown UI is the real item list. Open the Reputation panel, click the faction, and scroll its track. Every level shows exactly what it gives, including levels you have not reached. That in-game preview is always more current than any list written elsewhere, including this one — reward layouts get shuffled between patches.
- Progress is account-wide. Since The War Within, renown levels sit on your Warband rather than one character. Your third alt starts at the level your main earned.
- Renown gear is catch-up gear. It is a good floor for a fresh 80-level character or an alt at the start of a season, not a replacement for raid or Mythic+ loot.
- The cosmetics sit high on the track. Mounts, tabards, toys, pets and housing decor tend to live at the upper levels, which is why people push renown long after the item level stops mattering.
- Renown itself is not weekly capped — the fastest sources are. Weekly quests and event lockouts reset on Wednesday, so steady weekly play beats one marathon day.
| Source | What it is worth |
| Campaign and story chapters | Big one-time chunks; do these first on a new character |
| Weekly faction quests | The reliable backbone — never skip a reset |
| World quests and world content | Steady trickle, easy to do while farming other things |
| Zone events and delve-style content | Bursty, often the fastest per hour when up |
| Turn-in items and reagents | Useful for dumping stockpiles into a lagging faction |
Where do I buy Midnight renown items?
From the faction's quartermaster, which is normally parked in that faction's hub near the emissary who hands out the weekly quests. Unlocked items appear in their inventory automatically.
If an item is greyed out with a red "requires renown" line, the gate is your level, not your currency — no amount of gold moves it. If it is red on the cost line instead, you simply need more of that expansion's currency.
Do renown items carry over to my alts?
The renown level does, so alts walk in with every reward already unlocked. The individual purchases mostly do not — armor, weapons and consumables are bought per character with that character's gold and currency.
Mounts, pets, toys and transmog appearances are the exception: buy them once and they are collected account-wide forever.
Which faction should I push first?
Honest answer: the one holding the reward you actually want. Early in a season, prioritise whichever track hands out usable catch-up gear and profession recipes, because those decay in value fastest. Cosmetics and mounts keep their value all expansion, so they can wait.
Read the track before you commit a week to it. Two hours of world quests spent on the wrong faction is two hours you do not get back.
Can I catch up if I start late?
Yes. Blizzard has shipped renown catch-up in every recent expansion — bonus gains once one character is ahead, plus turn-in items and increased rewards later in the season. Starting a couple of months behind is inconvenient, not fatal.
The practical trap is spread: five factions at renown 8 is worse than two factions at renown 20, because rewards are back-loaded. Finish tracks, do not sample them.
